The Sciences- a Basis for Success
What Are Pure and Applied Sciences?
The sciences make up a large area of study and one of the vast interests of many international students. Ranging from anything like biology, chemistry and physics, studying such subjects can launch some very high profile careers. On another spectrum, such programs like environmental science and forensics put a very different spin on this popular choice.
Pure sciences
attempt to understand and describe the fundamental objects and
forces that govern our universe. How does a human brain function?
Why doesn't the Earth collapse into the sun? How fast do
electrons move? These types of questions are answered in pure
science courses. Topics traditionally include physics, chemistry
and biology, but you will find that you can easily concentrate in
such narrower areas as astrophysics, nuclear reactions, or
genetics.
Applied sciences provide a practical, useful spin on pure knowledge. You'll learn how to use scientific concepts to better society. Medicine, technology, and engineering have all started as forms of applied sciences. You'll be able to study things like applied human biology, material science and engineering, or environmental development. These can lead you to a vast number of great careers.
Where Will These Programs Take Me?
With a degree in sciences, the
options are endless! Pure science graduates tend to continue
their studies in higher degree programs. They are often involved
in interesting and important research- finding cures for
diseases, understanding the impact of outer space phenomenon on
the Earth, or attempting to understand subatomic structure. You
can also teach sciences at any school level you choose. You can
also find work at various companies or the government in a
scientific capacity.
Applied sciences can lead you to many careers as well. Graduates may choose to continue their studies with a further degree in applied science, engineering, or an MBA. They can use their skills to join a medical research company- creating, marketing and distributing solutions to the sick. Or how about getting involved with technology and building a new, modernized type of car? There are lots and lots of options.
The UK- a Place for Excellence
Historical Traditions
What do Isaac Newton, Michael
Faraday, Alexander Graham Bell and Charles Darwin all have in
common? They were all great scientists originating from the UK.
With institutions as well known as Oxford and Cambridge, the UK
has always been at the top of the scientific ladder. Studying in
the UK, you'll be joining a tradition outlined by many Noble
Prize winners and globally acknowledged pure and applied
scientists.
Don't let the UK's size fool you- ever since
the scientific revolution in the late 16th and 17th century,
Britain has produced brilliant scientific minds and technologies.
The fire extinguisher, electrical generator, vacuum cleaner,
Dolly the cloned sheep and the World Wide Web all have ties to
the UK's scientific force, and so do many more revolutionizing
inventions. The UK has historically been a global centre for
great scientific education.
Science Today!
History aside, breakthroughs are always being made, as tons of research goes on within the walls of many UK institutions. The opportunity to get involved in research or taking a hands-on applied approach to your studies is a definite plus to the studies here. The UK Government has invested financially into the research of such sciences, developing research in developing and crucial subjects like stem cells.
You may be interested to know that
the UK has seven science, technology and engineering research
councils that continue to keep the country at the cutting edge.
Over the last decade, nine UK scientists have been awarded Nobel
Prizes in the three categories of Chemistry, Physics, and
Physiology or Medicine. And the UK Government has greatly
increased spending on science in recent years, which supports
scientific institutions and research.
With all the UK has to offer, there's a program
here for you! Programs in pure and applied sciences include,
among many others:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Environmental Science and Development
- Applied chemistry, biology or physics
- Forensic science
- Physiology and medicine
- Astrophysics
- Nanotechnology
- And so much more!
The Best Programs Around!
