Arrange the sentences A, B, C and D to form a logicalsequence between sentences 1 and 6.

1.The modern era may be said to have begun about the year 1895.

A.So great a revolution in scientific thought has not occurred since Copernicus showed that the earth went round the sun.

B.The first step was the experimental demonstration that there exist little electrified bodies very much smaller than a hydrogen atom.

C.Between that year and the year 1900, those researches were begun which have changed our whole conception of matter.

D. Further, these studies have changed our whole idea of the meaning and purpose of physical science.

6.These little bodies were produced by passing an electric current through a glass tube almost entirely exhausted of air.

[1] CABD
[2] BDCA
[3] ACDB
[4] CDAB
[5] CBAD

Quantitative Ability

Consider a circle of radius 10 cm. and center O. Let AOB and COD be two perpendicular diameters of this circle. Consider the two tangent circles of diameters AO and OB respectively. We have now three circles. Construct now 2 circles whose centers are on the segment CD and are tangent to the other three circles.Find the radius(in cm) of the smallest circle?

(1)\frac{10}{3}
(2)\frac{20}{7}
(3)\frac{22}{7}
(4)3.5
(5)3.35

Posted on 21-March-09

So, folks here are the correct answers

Sentence Correction

The correct answer is (4).
C is the best sentence to follow 1. The phrase 'that year' in C corresponds with 1895 in 1. The possible answers are (1) and (4). B is a logical precedent to 6 (the continuity link "little bodies"). The best answer is (4).
Problem Solving

The correct answer is (1).

Let x be the radius of one of the smallest circle and N be its centre.
Let M be the centre of the circle with diameter AO.
In the right angle triangle MON, we have
OM^2 + ON^2 = MN^2
\Rightarrow 5^2 + (10-x)^2 = (5+x)^2[\because OD=10 \quad and \quad ND=x, \Rightarrow ON=(10-x) ]
 \Rightarrow 25 + 100 -20x + x^2= 25 + 10x + x^2
 \Rightarrow x = \frac{10}{3}

    My take on the verbal question: Option 4) Reasons: C would be the first sentence as it begins with ‘Between that year’.Here that year refers to ‘1895’. Hence it has to be between Option 1,Option 4 or Option 5. Sentence 6 begins with ‘these little bodies’. So obviously the previous sentence should also contain the phrase, which is there in sentence B.Hence the answer is of the pattern C??B.Clearly Option 4 is the answer.

    According to me, The answer for 1. is B. Explanation: Says the modern era started. Then the first step, description about it. The time period so on and so forth.

    Unfortunately I suck at math so not going to attempt the second.

    my take for verbal ability is option 4, as B should be the ending sentence, since 6. point speaks about electrified bodies… .thus all other options are eliminated. only 3 and 4 are left. 3rd ne is eliminated as A introduces copernicus haphazardly…so i go for option 4
