Critical Reasoning

That the policy of nuclear deterrence has worked thus far is unquestionable. Since the end of the Second World War, the very fact that there were nuclear armaments in existence has kept major powers from using nuclear weapons, for fear of starting a worldwide nuclear exchange that would make the land of the power initiating it uninhabitable. The proof is that a third world war between superpowers has not happened.

Which one of the following, if true, indicates a flaw in the argument?

(A) Maintaining a high level of nuclear armaments represents a significant drain on a country's economy.

(B) From what has happened in the past, it is impossible to infer with certainty what will happen in the future, so an accident could still trigger a third world war between superpowers.

(C) Continuing to produce nuclear weapons beyond the minimum needed for deterrence increases the likelihood of a nuclear accident.

(D) The major powers have engaged in many smaller-scale military operations since the end of the Second World War, while refraining from a nuclear confrontation.

(E) It cannot be known whether it was nuclear deterrence that worked, or some other factor, such as a recognition of the economic value of remaining at peace.
Data Sufficiency

Is \quad x=y?
  1. (x+y) (\frac{1}{x}+ \frac{1}{y})=4
  2. (x-40)^2=(y-40)^2

(A) Statement 1 alone is sufficient but statement 2 alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked.

(B) Statement 2 alone is sufficient but statement 1 alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked.

(C) Both statements 1 and 2 together are sufficient to answer the question but neither statement is sufficient alone.

(D) Each statement alone is sufficient to answer the question.

(E) Statements 1 and 2 are not sufficient to answer the question asked and additional data is needed to answer the statements.

So,folks here are the correct answers

Critical Reasoning
The correct answer is (E). The argument commits the fallacy of false correlation. The argument assumes the fear of the destructive affects of nuclear war has prevented a nuclear exchange. It does not take into account that other factors may have affected events, such as the economic value of remaining
Data Sufficiency
The correct answer is (A).

Statement I:

(x+y)(\frac{1}{x}+ \frac{1}{y})=4
\Rightarrow (x+y)(\frac{x+y}{xy})=4
\Rightarrow (x+y)^2=4xy
\Rightarrow (x+y)^2-4xy=0
\Rightarrow (x-y)^2=0
\Rightarrow x = y

Satement II:

(x-40)^2 = (y-40)^2
\Rightarrow (x-40) = \pm (y-40)
If \quad (x-40) = (y-40) \Rightarrow x = y
If \quad (x-40)=-(y-40)\Rightarrow x+y = 80
Hence Statement II alone is not sufficient.

Hence A is the answer

    Data Sufficiency

    Statement 1:

    (x + y) (1/x + 1/y) = 4

    =>(x + y) ^ 2 = 4 x y

    =>(x – y) ^ 2 = 0

    => x = y; hence sufficient.

    Statement 2:

    (x – 40) ^ 2 = (y – 40) ^ 2

    => x ^ 2 – y ^ 2 = 80 x – 80 y

    => (x – y) (x + y) = 80 (x – y)

    => x + y = 80; only if x is not y, which remains mystery here. Insufficient.

    Hence A

    It appears that answer to CR question is©, because this statement if true totally gives opposite argument for succesful nuclear deterrence policy. The answer for DS is (A).

    I am confident that the answer to the DS question is A on solving the first statement we get x=y but the second statement has two possibilities, either x=y or x+y=80 hence A

    In the CR question, question states- 1) countries have nuclear weapons. 2) They dont use it cause the country that uses it first will be doomed and finished by other countries with nuclear weapons 3) Thus the presence of nuclear weapons is preventing a nuclear war which is proved by the non-event of WW-III

    But countries keep on producing nuclear weapons beyond the requirement of deterrence, it may result in fights between countries about why the other country is making more weapons. This could trigger as race and may result in a war. This is said by C. Hence C

    DO correct me if I am missing any point

    CR-B, DS-A: (x+y)(1/x+1/y)=4 =>(x+y)2=4xy=> (x-y)2=0 =>x=y Thus, A is sufficient. (x-40)2=(y-40)2=>(x-40)=(y-40) n( x-40)=-(y-40) => x=y n x+y=80 Not sufficient HENCE the ANS is A.

    For CR my answer is E. For DS my answer is A coz in stmt ii, we get equation x+y =80, hence value of x & y can b (40,40),(50,30),(60,20).... No definite result. Hence answer is A.
