The Daytona Beach Campus

Embry-Riddle's Campus at Daytona Beach, Florida

The Daytona Beach campus is located adjacent to the Daytona Beach International Airport. The high- technology industry in the Orlando area, as well as nearby Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center, provide the university with an outstanding support base.

The Campus:

The campus offers state-of-the-art facilities, including the 75,000-square-foot College of Aviation building. The Gill Robb Wilson Aviation Technology Center houses classrooms, a weather room, and dispatch headquarters.

The Lindbergh Center houses modern classroom facilities and houses the writing and computer information systems laboratories. The computer science complex provides hands-on experience with mainframe and personal computers.

The John Paul Riddle Student Center is home to the campus visit office (where campus tours begin); a full-service cafeteria (the Food Court) and the Landing Strip snack bar; the campus bookstore; the mailroom with U.S. postal, UPS, and FedEx services, student activities offices; student employment; the parking office; safety communications office; information center; records and registration offices; admissions offices, international student services; and conference rooms. In Doolittle Hall Annex, academically focused Student Academic Support Center helps students make the transition from high school to college more easily.

Canaveral Hall is home to student financial services, the cashier's office, and financial Aid. Canaveral is also home to the Eagle Card center. Daytona Beach campus students (faculty and staff also) can get free Eagle Cards which serve as identification cards, access cards, and debit cards for many campus services and venues including dining services, flight payments, and vending and laundry machines.

The Jack R. Hunt Memorial Library is a 48,000-square-foot facility with a seating capacity of 800. The building holds more than 90,000 books, as well as periodicals, documents, newspapers, microfilm, media programs, and a historical aviation collection with materials dating from 1909 to the present. Complete service is provided seven days a week throughout the academic term, with extended hours during final examinations. Additional facilities include a multi-function auditorium and instructional media center, the ICI Center fieldhouse and fully-equipped fitness center; many athletic fields; an olympic-size outdoor swimming pool; tennis, basketball, and raquetball courts; and an interfaith chapel.

The Daytona Beach Area:

Daytona Beach has something for everyone- the adventure of a city and the warmth, charm, and friendly atmosphere of a small town. One of Florida's primary tourist destinations, Daytona Beach is located on the central east coast of Florida and is known as the World's Most Famous Beach. The area's many lakes and rivers along with the ocean offer an endless variety of recreational activities, such as freshwater and saltwater fishing, sport fishing tournaments, sailing, surfing, snorkeling, and swimming.

During the winter, you can always head for one of the nearby springs, where temperatures remain in the low 70s all year round. Swimmers and snorkelers can spend their time shoulder-to-shoulder with the bluegills, the tilapia, and the manatees that swim up the St. Johns River every winter. The springs, which are fed with a flow of millions of gallons of water a day, also offer some of the best inner tubing in the area. the ocean fronts 23 miles of beaches in the greater Daytona Beach area

Winters are mild and summers are warm in Daytona Beach thanks to its location on the Atlantic Ocean and the Halifax River, an estuary which flows between the beachside and the mainland. The area's average temperature year-round is 70.5 degrees.

Arts and Nature:
Theater-goers and music buffs turn to events sponsored by such groups as Seaside Music Theater and the biannual Florida International Festival. For the art enthusiast, scheduled exhibits are planned throughout the year at the Museum of Arts and Sciences; Daytona Beach Community College and its Southeast Museum of Photography; Art League of Daytona Beach, and other area museums and galleries. For nature lovers, popular destinations include the Museum of Arts and Science and its Planetarium; the Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet; and the Tomoka Basin GeoPark.

Ocean Center:
The Ocean Center is a 225,000-square-foot multipurpose facility which accommodates trade shows, sports events, concerts, meetings, expositions, and banquets. It is located on the beachside across from the Adam's Mark hotel and the OceanWalk entertainment and dining complex.

Parks and Recreation:
Take advantage of pristine Florida parks along the coast and in the Central Florida area. These include Canaveral National Seashore, DeLeon Springs State Park, Blue Spring State Park, Hontoon Island State Park, Washington Oaks State Gardens, and Matanzas Inlet. Canoe in one of several rivers and creeks or hike along the Florida Trail. A new water park, Adventure Landing, recently opened next to the Adam's Mark hotel in Daytona Beach.

Speedway and Racing:
A variety of racing events are held throughout the year at the world-famous Daytona International Speedway. Speed weeks in February climax with the famed Daytona 500 auto race. Bike Week in March features the Daytona Beach 200 Motorcycle Classic. The Daytona USA attraction offers a unique inside look at the racing world.

Important Information:

Housing:
Campus housing is primarily for undergraduates, with limited availability for graduate students. We suggest that grad students seek off-campus housing. Off-campus housing is near the same cost as living on campus. You may expect to pay from $500 to $700 per month for an apartment. Normally it is not difficult to secure housing in the area. There are many apartments within a short distance of the university.

Airport:
The Daytona Beach International Airport serves the area with the airlines Continental, Delta Connection, and Vintage Air.

Buses and transportation:
Votran (Volusia County Transit) provides regularly scheduled transportation to the campus, bus stations, motel/hotel areas, beaches, hospitals, shopping areas, and major business areas. Interstate Greyhound Bus Lines also serve the area.
