Shyam Lal College was founded in 1964 by Padamshri Shyam Lal Gupta,
the Chairman, Shyam Lal Charitable Trust. Dr. Zakir Hussain, the
then Vice-President of India and Chancellor of Delhi University
laid the foundation stone on 24th May 1964. Since then, the college
has continually committed itself to equal opportunity in education
for all. In 1969, the college spread itself into an Evening College
and is now a full-fledged college of Delhi University. The college
offers education at undergraduate level in Commerce and Humanities.
Located on G.T.Road, it houses over a thousand students in its
campus. It is also made accessible by Metro. All you have to do is
to get down at Welcome station on Rithala-Shahdara Red Line route
from where one can easily walk down to the college. Facilities Library The students enrolled in the college, the Faculty members and Non-teaching staff of the college are members of the college library. At present, the library is a host of 33,470 books, 38 journals and magazines and 12 newspapers. The library also has a reprographic unit. The library provides this facility to its member at a nominal cost of 0.50 paisa per copy. Library also provides book bank service, internet access, reference service, inter-library loan, in-service training for library professionals, search engines for relevant information etc. the college is also going to be connected to the University's Network system which would access the Delhi University's Central Library System resources from the College itself. Student societies- Shyam Lal College offers a platform for student's creativity and talent. Needless to say, the most popular societies of the college are dramatic society and music societies. The college conducts various workshops to hone the musical and acting skills of the students and has won many competitions. The sports society is another place where the spirit and vigor of the young. With many games like Judo, basket ball, cricket etc to choose from, sports society brings the essential discipline and training together for its members. The College also publishes a magazine titled "STAVAK" where the think-tank of the college write and reflect through their creative faculties. It is an ensemble of articles, sketches, and poetry where words make music and sharing happens through the medium of language. N.C.C. training in the college is another feature of Shyam Lal College's student life. There are different wings for boys & girls cadets such as Air, Navy & Army. The society also organizes annual fest called, Arohi. N.S.S. (National Service Scheme) Wing of the College carries out various activities like Yoga, Poster making, Traffic Control Camps etc. Student's Union is the premier student's body in the college. The membership to the union is compulsory for all students of the college. It holds the democratic ideals to encourage student's participation in the college's cultural and intellectual life. It assists the college authority in organizing various students activities like cultural fests and social events. Financial Aid: Financial Assistance is supported by the college for deserving meritorious students. This assistance is given in the form of fee concessions and stipends for students with satisfactory performance or excellence in academic achievement. A.(Hons) Economics- 72%, Political Science- 58%, Hindi- 55% B. Com (Prog. ) - 73% B.A.(Prog ) 58% ELIGIBILITY B.Com (Hons) a candidate seeking admission to this course must have passed Mathematics and English and must have secured 45% marks in aggregate at +2 level. A student seeking admission to the course without Book Keeping / Accountancy and Commerce (Business Studies) at the qualifying examination will be considered after deducting 5% marks from aggregate i.e. 2 % for Commerce and 3% for Accountancy in aggregate B.A. (Hons.) Economics- a candidate must have passed Mathematics and English at 10+2 level, and must have secured 45% marks in aggregate and 45% in both English and Mathematics at +2 level. Admission will be offered on the basis of Best Four Subject at +2 level. Best Four must include English & Mathematics as one of the electives. In addition, the department might conduct an informal interview before admitting eligible candidates. B.A. (Hons.) Political Science - a candidate must have 45% marks aggregate at +2 level. Candidates who have not studied Political Science at +2 level, will be considered after deducting 5% in aggregate. B.A. (Hons.) Hindi- a candidate must have obtained 50% marks in Hindi and 45% marks in aggregate at +2 level B.A. (Prog.)/ B.Com.(Prog.) - a candidate must have 40% in aggregate in the qualifying Examination. For B.Com. (Pass), a candidate without Book Keeping / Accountancy and Commerce (Business Studies) at the qualifying examination will be considered after deducting 5% marks from aggregate i.e. 2% for Commerce and 3% for Accountancy.
