Frequently
Asked Questions
How do I know if Online Learning
is right for me?
Distance learning courses are ideal for students who want to
make progress toward their degree from anywhere in the world.
Distance learning enables students with jobs and busy schedules,
travelers, professionals and individuals to pursue their degree;
and for those who are simply interested in learning more.
Are online programs comparable
in quality to on-campus programs?
All online courses are taught by the
same
faculty and instructors teaching on-campus courses at
ASU.
The quality is the same; the expectations
of both students and faculty are the same. Online courses
are sometimes considered by students to be more rigorous than their
classroom counterpart. This is because online learning takes
self-discipline and strong initiative.
What does my diploma look
like?
Your diploma and transcripts from
ASU will look the same whether you take courses in
classroom or online format.
There is no indication on your
diploma or transcript that your studies were completed via online
learning.
How are the classes
taught?
The classes are taught by regular faculty who have taught
internet courses many times. They use a variety of methods to share
material, to have students interact, and to be able to monitor
student's progress throughout the course.
Do I have to be good with
computers?
It certainly is helpful to be good with computers. If you plan
to take all of your courses online, you should be savvy with using
technology - to send and receive information, to research, and to
communicate with others
When are classes offered?
Online classes are offered in Fall and Spring terms (15 weeks
and two 7 week sessions) as well as the Winter (3 weeks) and Summer
Sessions (two 5 weeks, one 8 week).
How many classes can I take at
one time online?
The same amount as you could in a regular classroom, usually
about 18 credits for Spring and Fall semesters, 7 credits for the
five-week Summer session, 9 credits for the eight-week summer
session and 3 credits for three-week Winter session.
Can I move at my own
pace?
Each instructor will have his/her own requirements. It is
likely there will be timelines for class work to be done, deadlines
for papers, exam dates, etc.
Will I get done faster if I take
online courses?
The amount of time it takes you to complete your degree
depends on how many courses you take per year.
How are the classes

The classes are taught by regular faculty who have taught
internet courses many times. They use a variety of methods to share
material, to have students interact, and to be able to monitor

How often do classes meet? How
often do I have to log on?
How the classes are managed depends on the individual
instructor. Generally, they will run on a regular college schedule
(semester, summer session). A few courses may require specific
log-on times for certain activities or assignments, but most
courses have assignments and due dates and how or when the student
logs on to complete them is determined by the student. Some
assignments and tests may only be available for a limited time
(such as one week), so they must be completed at some point during
that time period.
What kind of equipment do I need
to have?
At minimum, you need access to a computer that can access the
internet, preferably with a high-speed connection. You should have
access to email, and word processing, power point, and other
applications needed to perform a variety of educational functions.
