Critical Reasoning

Advertisement: Anyone who exercises knows from firsthand experience that exercise leads to better performance of such physical organs as the heart and the lungs, as well as to improvement in muscle tone. And since your brain is a physical organ, your actions can improve its performance, too. Act now. Subscribe to Stimulus: read the magazine that exercises your brain. The advertisement employs which one of the following argumentative strategies?

(A) It cites experimental evidence that subscribing to the product being advertised has desirable consequences.
(B) It ridicules people who do not subscribe to Stimulus by suggesting that they do not believe that exercise will improve brain capacity.
(C) It explains the process by which the product being advertised brings about the result claimed for its use.
(D) It supports its recommendation by a careful analysis of the concept of exercise.
(E) It implies that brains and muscle are similar in one respect because they are similar in another respect.

So,folks here are the correct answers

Critical Reasoning
The correct answer is E. The argument draws an analogy between muscles and brains, and it concludes that since exercise improves the performance of one's muscles it will also improve the performance of one's brain. The answer is (E).
Problem Solving
The correct answer is 2.

Let U be the set of all three-digit numbers, let S be the set of three-digit numbers that contain no 2s, and let T be the set of three digit numbers that contain no 3s. Then S ∩T is the set of three-digit numbers containing neither a 2 nor a 3 and U − (S ∪ T) is the set of three-digit numbers containing at least one 2 and at least one 3. We have U = 900, S = T = 8 · 92, and S ∩ T = 7 · 82. Therefore S ∪ T = S + T − S ∩ T = 848, and U − (S ∪ T)= 52.

    Problem Solving

    When it has exactly one 2 and one 3, the following ways pop up:

    2 and 3 and 8 ways or 3 and 2 and 8 ways or 7 ways and 2 and 3 or 7 ways and 3 and 2 or 2 and 8 ways and 3 or 3 and 8 ways and 2; that totales to 1 × 1 × 8 + 1 × 1 × 8 + 7 × 1 × 1 + 7 × 1 × 1 + 1 × 8 × 1 + 1 × 8 × 1 = 46 numbers.

    And when it has two of one kind and one of the other, the following ways pop up:

    223, 232, 322, 332, 323, 233 = 6 numbers.

    I can see a total of 46 + 6 = 52 such numbers from here, and would go with (A).

    C R – E. PS – D. Problem Solving: as two digits are fixed in 3 digit number, so possible combinations are six. (1) 23@ (2) 2@3 (3) @23 (4) 32@ (5) 3@2 (6) @32

    @ can be from 0 to 9. so there are 60 possibilities. but for @23 and @32, zero can’t b the first digit. so the actual number is 58.

    CR: C (because the question ask for the strategy of the advertisement)

    PS: A – 52

    case 1: 23x => we have 10 x case 2: 2×3 => we have 10 x

    case 3: x23 => we have 9 x

    we can switch position of 2&3 => so we have (9 + 10 + 10)*2 = 58

    but 6 duplicate entries found here

    for example 23x and 2×3 both can have 233

    the final result is: 58 – 6 = 52
