if you look carefully at the figure – the angle at the lower right corner is obtuse and that at the lower left corner is acute; as a result, the left diagonal appears to belong to a “much bigger” parallelogram and therefore we feel that it’s the longer diagonal;
it’s actually a really good illusion – but it’s difficult to deduce that the diagonals have the same length – unless we derive a mathematical proof for it (using similar triangles, etc, if possible)
