In stating the argument that the President does not care about the plight of the poor, a prominent Democrat inferred that Republicans have never been concerned about them.

(B) a prominent Democrat inferred that Republicans have never been concerned about the poor.
(C) a prominent Democrat implied that Republicans have never been concerned about them.
(D) a prominent Democrat inferred that Republicans have never been concerned about it.
(E) a prominent Democrat implied that Republicans have never been concerned about it.

Problem Solving

Sandy borrowed 12, 000$ at 10% p.a. he repaid 7, 000$ at the end of the 1st year. What amount should he pay at the end of the 2 nd year to completely discharge the loan, compound interest being reckoned?

A. $6250
B. $6220
C. $6420
D. $6820
E. $6520

So,folks here are the correct answers

Sentence Correction
The correct answer is E.

(A), (B), and (D) incorrectly use "inferred" to mean "implied." (A) and (C ) use the pronoun "them" instead of "it" (the antecedent is "plight").

Problem Solving
The correct answer is D.

At 10% p.a., amount at the end of the 1 st year is $13,200.
Sandy has repaid $6,200 to repay at that point i.e. the beginning of the second year.
Hence principal for the 2 nd year is $6,200.
At 10% p.a. that will become $6,820 at the end 2nd year.
Hence to completely discharge the loan at the end of the 2 nd year, Sandy has to pay $6,820.

1st year: 12000 * 1.1 = 13200

paid 7000 => pay for 2nd year: 6200 + its interest = 6200 * 1.1 = 6820

SC should be E. To infer is to understand something out of something else; to imply is to hint or insinuate. I think the latter is better here. Problem is that both ‘it’ and ‘them’ are ambiguous – ‘it’ refers to both ‘argument’ and ‘plight’ and ‘them’ to ‘the poor’ and ‘republicans’. But apparently that’s a second class mistake so it’s not as worse as the idiom mistake above.

As for Quant: 1st year it’s 12,000+1,200(10%)=13,200 ; then repay 7,000 and left with 6,200; 2nd year add 10% 6,200+620=6,820 which is D.

SC: D - implied will change the meaning of the sentence. - them is ambiguous. May refer to democrats - it clearly refers to “plight of poor”. D also keeps infer as it is

Looking at the part before the comma, the Democrat is the one who’s stated the argument and the part after the comma states that the Democrat implied. So only ‘C’ and ‘E’ make the cut. Now the subject is “plight of the poor” which is singluar. So ‘it’ should be there. Hence correct choice is ‘E’. Had it been only ‘poor’ then ‘C’ would have been correct.
