International Student: Plan for Admission to US University

Event Calendar:Application Timeline for admissions to a US University

International Students need to meticulously plan out their application process to avoid missing any admissions deadlines for each university they apply to. Created below is a timeline map that will help you stematically plan for your admission, for the purposes of this examples we have picked a Fall 2009 start date:

June 08: Gather information pertaining to the GRE test and admissions procedure to each of the universities you are considering attending.

July-Sep 08: Start preparing for the GRE and TOEFL tests. Plan for the test date and get yourself registered for the test sometime in October.

October 08: Practice full length mock tests. Take the GRE and TOEFL Test.

Oct-Nov08: Start preparing SoP(Statement of Purpose), LoRs (Letter of Recommendations), academic transcripts and other documents to be send to the university. A good SoP is a great way to impress the admission committee members!

Nov 08-Jan 09: Create a shortlist of potential universities based on your test scores and send your prepared documents to each university you wish to apply to.

Wait for the results from the universities.........

May 09-June09: Once you have your acceptance letter, start preparing for the Visa application - make sure you have all your forms! Now is also the time start applying for Financial Aid.

June-July 09: Time for you US Visa internview - good luck! Gather information of the climate and culture of the place you are going to.

August 09: Try to arrive a bit before classes start to give yourself time to adjust to your new home. Check with the school (and your visa) to see how early you can arrive.

September 09: Courses Begin.

Hi could you please elaborate on how to shortlist US universities that one would want to apply to based on scores? How would I know the cut-off scores to each university and their additional requirements? And I don’t mean information posted on their websites. that would really help thanx

Hi I am Prashanth Kumar. I am a Sowtware Engg. (BE CS in Evening college VTU). I have 66.5 % aggregate. Am I eligible for MS? How can I plan for an university when I am not sure of my GRE or TOEFL score? If I have to take GRE and TOEFL, with preparation of 2 hours a day, when do you think it will be very helpful to take these tests?

    Please advice. Thanks

Hema, you should not worry. The only thing is you will not be able to apply to universities that have deadlines in Dec or early Jan else there is no harm in giving exam in December. There are few good universities that have deadlines in the month of Feb/March too and you can apply to those.

Check out What’s a scholarship and how do I get one?.

Also, you can join our Schloraship and Financial Aid community.

    Good luck!!

But my problem is all my friends relatives are asking me to stop my plans to US because of the tough times and economy in recession in US. How long will the position be the same? Can we expect economy to recover after a year? And also how about the chances of getting financial aid at this recession period…..

    Dear swathiury,

Your work experience is not at all a disadvantage instead it will help you to certain extent in your application to the universities. Of course most of the students opting MS in the USA are without any work experience. So take it for granted that you don’t have any disadvantage.

If you are looking for Spring 2010 admission you should finish your GRE by August and if it is for Fall 2010 you can take GRE by October/November so that you will have ample time to apply for the universities.

    Dear ni3gogna1,

Your academic profile is definitely game for the top universities. But the admission into top universities depends upon your SOPs, LORs and work exp besides your GRE score. Also you should look to score 1400+ if you want to make it into the top US universities especially for MS in IT and Computer Science.

    Dear Franklikeme,

You cannot plan to study abroad without proper funds from your side. Though good number of scholarships are granted by the universities and other organizations they are not guaranteed and they are definitely not sufficient to serve every student planning to study abroad. Also, the scholarship amount may not account for the total cost of study (including fees and living expenses). So every study abroad aspirant must have a definite source of income to fund his education. So you must look into aspect and look out for alternate arrangement of financing your education i.e. either bank loans or help from your other family members.

    All the best….
