How to choose an MBA program

The most important question to ask oneself when choosing an MBA program is "What contacts do I want to make in my MBA?". To expand further, the best value that a person gets out of an MBA course is the value of creating a network of professionals that you can stay in touch with throughout your career.

The content of the MBA, the courses that one takes, are generally the same at an accredited program. Finance, accounting, marketing etc. don't really differ that much. The real value comes into play during class discussions, making contacts and the quality of the companies that actively recruit at each school.

I’m taking a class at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. While many people think I’m learning so much… I’m not learning any more than one can find in a book. I agree with you about contacts being the only thing you really gain from getting an M.B.A.

I think business school is just one big fraternity. You pay big bucks to get in and connect with people like yourself. Alumni of the group help you find jobs and make connections. In college you’re paying for friends and in business school you’re paying for contacts.

Even though that’s really lame and it’s sad how far just knowing the right people can get you regardless of your talent or ability, that’s really how it works.

I’d suggest knowing where you want to work after business school and then find out where they recruit from. You’ll find they get 80% of their new MBA hires from one or two schools.

    Hi there Vidyap,

Yes, to be admitted into a university, you will need to take and pass (accordingly) to the school’s required TOEFL and or GMAT score. Please note that different schools have varying score requirements. The best approach would be to research each university that interests you, and become acquainted with their specific admission guidelines.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask me.

    Thanks!
