Small talk in Portugal
If the Portuguese people were not very different from the Spanish, Portugal would not exist. The Portuguese are an Atlantic nation, the Spanish are a Mediterranean nation. Until the 1974 revolution Portugal looked towards Africa (Angola, Mozambique) and South Africa.
Mind your manners:
- They are not so touchy about race or religion as the Spanish. They are not so emotional as the Italians or the Spanish.
- They are more formal than the Spanish. They address anyone who appears qualified or intelligent as Duotor or Engenheiro.
- Don't ask questions about the revolution, don't praise their neighbour, Spain.
- Keep to the beauty of the country and their successful football team Benefica Lisboa.
- They avoid conflicts with colleagues and business partners.
- They are friendly, cheerful and communicative even at the beginning of a relationship.
