Small Talk in Portugal

Small talk in Portugal

If the Portuguese people were not very different from the Spanish, Portugal would not exist. The Portuguese are an Atlantic nation, the Spanish are a Mediterranean nation. Until the 1974 revolution Portugal looked towards Africa (Angola, Mozambique) and South Africa.

Mind your manners:

  • They are not so touchy about race or religion as the Spanish. They are not so emotional as the Italians or the Spanish.
  • They are more formal than the Spanish. They address anyone who appears qualified or intelligent as Duotor or Engenheiro.
  • Don't ask questions about the revolution, don't praise their neighbour, Spain.
  • Keep to the beauty of the country and their successful football team Benefica Lisboa.
  • They avoid conflicts with colleagues and business partners.
  • They are friendly, cheerful and communicative even at the beginning of a relationship.
