Love and Hate


Greek word 'Misein' means 'To-hate'. This root can be found in many words like:

Misanthrope: - Misein + Anthropos(Greek word for Mankind)

Misogynist: - Misein + Gyne(Greek word for Woman)

Misogamist: - Misein + Gamos(Greek for Marriage)


Misanthrope

Misanthrope = Misein + Anthropos = Hate + Mankind
Meaning is very simple, "One who hates Mankind"

'Anthropos' can also be found in:

  • 'Anthropology' that means "Study of Mankind/Human Race".

  • 'Philanthropist' that means "One who loves Mankind".

Note: Here hating or loving mankind means believing or not believing in charitable deeds, Denoting time, money and energy for the good of others.


Misogynist

Misogynist: - Misein + Gyne = Hate + Woman
Word is self explanatory, "One who hates Woman"

'Gyne' can also be found in:

  • 'Gynaecology' that means "Study of female reproductive organs and other female oriented diseases".

  • Gynaecologist means "Expert in Gynaecology".


  • 'Monogyne and Polygyne' are the the terms that are used female caste of social insects, especially like ants, wasps and bees for "A colony with Single Queen and A colony with Multiple Queens", respectively.





Misogamist


Misogamist: - Misein + Gamos = Hate + Marriage


One who hates Marriage" is the meaning in English language for Misogamist.



'Gamos' gave birth to many other words in English language as well like:



  • Monogamy = Mono(one) + Gamos = One + marriage.

  • Means the culture of only one marriage.

  • Bigamy = Bi(two) + Gamos = Two + marriage. Means two marriage at a same time by either Man or Woman.


  • Polygamy = Poly(many) + Gamos = Many + Marriage. Means more than two marriages at a time. The custom that was prevalent in ancient times; where Kings used to keep many wives at the same time. Though the correct but rarely used word for this custom is 'POLYGYNY'


Note: 'Poly' can also be found in 'Polyandry' that is made of two words - Poly(many) + Andros(man); meaning "the custom of more than two men with a woman". This custom is still practiced in Himalayas and some other regions of Tibet.
