NOTATIONS TO BUILD A FAMILY TREE

Notations are symbols that are developed to show

  • A particular characteristic of a family member
  • Or his/her relation with another member in family.

There are no standard notations. They can be formed as per individual discretion though it is advisable to develop easy notations and use a particular set of notations all time to make sure you draw family tree - Quickly & Accurately.

Following set of notation has all the mention properties.

1 A is a male: A*

2 B is a female: B/

3 Sex of C is unknown: C

4 A and B are siblings: A - B

5 A and B are married to each other: A = B

6 A and B are C's children: Photo 10832

7 A is the uncle/aunt of B: Photo 10839

8 A is the only child of B: Photo 10841

How to make a family tree?

To make a family tree from the given data, we should go step by step. Let's discuss this with the help of an example.

A, B, C, D, E and F are related to each other as given here.
  • B is F's daughter in law.
  • D is A's only grand child.
  • C is D's only uncle.
  • A has only 2 children F and C, one of them is male and another is female.
  • E is the father of C.

STEP 1 : Identify the gender of Elements

While figuring out the genders of the elements(members of the family in the given question) both the points should be kept in mind.
  1. The direct indications in the data given in question.
  2. The data that generates from the other data.

S.No. STATEMENT IMPACT NOTATION
1 B is F's daughter in law. Means B is female B/
2 D is A's only grand child. no means for gender point of view
3 C is D's only uncle. Means C is male C*
4 A has only 2 children F and C, one of them is male and another is female. we know that C is male from 3rd row, so F is female F/
5 E is the father of C. Means E is male. E*

STEP 2 : Identify the generations in family tree

S.No. STATEMENT Number of generations
1 B is F's daughter in law. 2
2 D is A's only grand child. 3
3 C is D's only uncle. 2
4 A has only 2 children F and C, one of them is male and another is female. 2
5 E is the father of C. 2
Being one family, it can be said that there are 3 generations family, As there is no member above A and below D as per given data. Now members need to be arranged in tree.

STEP 3 : Identify the positions of Elements in family tree

S.No. STATEMENT REPRESENTATION
1 B is F's daughter in law. Photo 11200
2 D is A's only grand child. Photo 11195
3 C is D's only uncle. Photo 11199
4 A has only 2 children F and C, one of them is male and another is female. Photo 11197
5 E is the father of C. Photo 11198

Collecting them all together we get:

This is a very good article – it actually teaches us how to evaluate family trees… Thanks Gaurav.

There seems to be this issue of pictures not loading in various pages of this site- I guess it is because you moved to a new server and some of the links still point to old locations. Like the picture above points to http://edge.quantserve.com/quant.js

I guess someone (administrators) needs to look into this issue across the website.
