Are you analytically sound?
This question is asked at every level of my life; be it admission to school, college or job interview. But there was tons of questions in my mind like what is analytical reasoning, how to measure it, how to compare it, am I good analytically & so on.
To get answer to my questions,I started taking lessons/tests on
any available content with tags like logical tests, quantitative
skills, IQ builder etc.
Let me tell you, analytical reasoning is not only about how quickly you do calculations with numbers but how you understand the problem (or given situation) and come up with solution considering given constraints. You need to think on your feet. It involves the following
Let me tell you, analytical reasoning is not only about how quickly you do calculations with numbers but how you understand the problem (or given situation) and come up with solution considering given constraints. You need to think on your feet. It involves the following
- Understand the information
- Comprehend the data/info
- Know what is expected outcome
- Analyze the information (considering the expected outcome)
You need to be comfortable with the process and may not worry
about the time taken to solve it initially. Once you are
comfortable with fundamentals of analytical problem solving, then
speed can be improved.
Some basic questions to check your analytical reasoning:
Gary wants to dry his clothes. It takes him 60 minutes to dry 10 clothes under the sun. The very next day, he has 20 clothes (double the numbers) to dry the clothes. What should be the expected time to dry double the number of clothes?
Answer: It will take same time (60 minutes) to dry double the number of clothes. As we are not following per unit measurement to calculate the time. Clothes are dried under the sun and it takes same time (i.e. 60 minutes) to dry n numbers of clothes. Irrespective of value of n.
The distance between place A and place B is 100 miles. I drove from place A to place B at an average speed of 40 miles per hour and drove back from B to A at an average speed of 50 miles per hour. What is my average speed per hour for the round trip?
If some of you have answered 45 miles per hour (simple average of 40 and 50), it is wrong. The correct answer is 44.44 miles per hour. Average speed is equal to Total distance divided by time taken. Total Distance is 200 miles (100 miles from A to B and 100 miles from B to A). Time taken from A to B is 2.5 hours (100 miles divided by average speed of 40). Time taken from B to A is 2 hours (100 divided by average speed of 50). Therefore total time for the entire journey is 4.5 hours (2.5 hours + 2 hours). And the average speed for the entire trip is 200 divided by 4.5 (Total Distance divided by total time) i.e. 44.44 miles per hour.
