Ask The Experts

RC seeks to fulfill the demands of corporate life.

Reading comprehension is the ability to read and understand unfamiliar materials and to answer questions about them. You will be presented with passages drawn from a variety of subject areas, including humanities, the sciences, latest happenings in society etc. The questions will ask you to analyze what is stated in the passage and to identify underlying assumptions and implications.

The presence of RC is found in many Tests, like:

  • CAT

  • GMAT

  • GRE

The reason being that in most management professions, you are expected to deal efficiently with large volumes of unfamiliar and dense info in relatively short time span.

Let's discuss some common queries.

  1. Keyword to define RC preparation?

    • Practice

    • Accuracy

    • Speed

    • Understanding

  2. What is the range of topics?

Passages in RC section are mostly very general.

They can be picked from anywhere, like:

    • Business headline of a particular day

    • Economy - some general economic problem of a country

    • Religion

    • Science or Art related stuff

    • Politics or any other

  3. What should I read to do good in RC section?

This is one of the most commonly asked questions related to this section and tricky as well to some extent.

To start, you can pick literally anything. After all, reading speed(how fast you read supported by clear understanding) is one of the critical success factors to do good in this section. But ideally, one or two newspapers a day in addition to a blend of fiction and non fiction novels will do for you.

Reading different stuff not only help you in getting versatile knowledge but also improve your vocab.

  4. You have begun reading, but find it boring.

Reading material is never boring in itself. A humorous passage will not appeal a serious person while an ulcer is wonderful to a pathologist. So, it is all a question of perspective.

Always remind your self these points:-
    • RC section is compact, rigorous and allows no nonsense.

    • You are allowed to choose read what you are interested in.

    • You have no choice, if you are serious about your carrier.

  5. You are taking too long to complete a passage. What is the remedy?

In the initial stages you may not time your reading. But, timing is the very first step in controlling the diffusion in concentration. You can call the same thing as reading speed as well.

To improve your reading speed, You can follow these two simple rules.

    • Simulate test conditions while reading

    • Time your reading

This becomes important for you to utilise your time fully. According to a survey, published in Delhi Times, 75 of the time a reader wastes either by indulging in some physical work like attending a call or reading a sms or in thinking something unproductive.%

  6. What do you mean by 'Time your reading'?

Focus to 'Time the reading' is nothing more than brushing you for increased concentration by providing you quantitative targets.

When you are starting out with your RC preparation, cut out passages, which

have a similar style and are more or less of equal length. Determine your reading speed on day one. Lets say it is 150 words/minute. Read at that speed for sometime say a week or something and after that, stretch yourself by increasing time constraints, Say 150 words/45 seconds.

  7. How well am I reading now?

To get a fair idea in regard, try out a very simple exercise.

    • Read the given passage at your normal speed.

    • Without referring back to the passage, tick the answer to each of the five questions.

    • Your answers should correspond to what the author has stated in the passage.

NOTE

  • Reading has two aspects: Your reading speed and your capacity to comprehend the author's stated thought.

  • Do not add any external knowledge that you have on the subject.

  • It is not your knowledge that is tested but your reading and comprehending skills.

    Dear shaya,

If you are looking to get into reading some books to improve your comprehension skills better keep away from fiction. It is non-fiction that you have to read to improve your RC skills. For this rather that choosing only one area of study you can choose different areas of study like Philosophy, Economics, Politics, Business etc; so that this will help you in the GD and PI sessions as well.
