"Qu'est-ce que vous portez?" - What are you wearing?

"Moi, je porte…" - Me, I'm wearing…


un manteau - a coat
un blouson - a jacket
un imperméable - a raincoat
un chemisier - a blouse (for females)


une chemise - a dress shirt
une jupe - a skirt
un pantalon - pants
une robe - a dress
un parapluie - an umbrella
un T-shirt - a T-shirt


des sandales - sandals
des tennis - sneakers
des chaussures - shoes
des chaussettes - socks


une cravate - a tie
un short - shorts
un jean - jeans
un chapeau - a hat
une ceinture - a belt
des lunettes - sunglasses
un maillot de bain - a bathing suit
un pyjama - pyjamas


"Qu'est-ce qu'elle porte?"
What is she wearing?

"Elle porte un jupe."
She is wearing a skirt.

"Qu'est-ce qu'il porte?"
What is he wearing?

"John porte des tennis."
John is wearing sneakers.

"Qu'est-ce que tu portes?"
What are you wearing?


Porter: "to wear" or "to carry"

Porter is an infinitive word. If you want to use porter in the present tense, here's a list of how to change the word so that it matches the person you are describing.

Present Tense
Je porte - I am wearing
Tu portes - You are wearing

Il porte - He is wearing
Elle porte - She is wearing

Nous portons - We are wearing
Vous portez - You are wearing (speaking to many)

Ils portent - They are wearing (male)
Elles portent - They are wearing (female)

    It would be much more appreciable if the pronunciations could also be given…I know it is quite a task but what is french without the weird pronunciations….right?....:) ;)

    No doubt it’s an amazing lesson ! But I agree to Rushmee’s proposal. Tiffany, can you please post the pronunciation of the words given above. I think, it will help more to learn those words.

    Would “Moi, je porte un parapluie” be correct at all? How can you wear an umbrella? Or does it work differently in French?

    Yes, I checked Schaum’s Outline of French Grammar book and it says “Je porte un parapluie” is correct. It doesn’t translate perfectly into English as you have pointed out – but I suppose it would be akin to saying “I am donning an umbrella”.
