London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week is a fashion industry event that lasts about one week. London is one of the "Big Four" fashion capitals of the world, along with Milan, Paris and New York City.

The Fashion Week is held semi-annually - the spring and summer collections are shown in autumn, while the fall and winter collections are should in the winter. In 2008, London celebrated their 25th year of British fashion, an industry that is worth more than 40 billion pounds. There are sure to some some fun parties and chances to view the latest trends. It's exciting to know that London is a big part of the fashion world.


Glastonbury Festival


The Glastonbury Festival is arguably one of the biggest rock festivals in the world. In 2007 alone, there were over 700 acts played on over 80 stages. Glastonbury originated in 1970, and is heavily influenced by the hippie and free festival movement of that time. In 2008 the headline acts for the festival included Leonard Cohen, Kings of Leon, The Verve, and Jay-Z.

The Glastonbury Festival takes place every year at Worthy Farm, six miles east of the town Glastonbury. In 2009, the festival will be held on June 26th, 27th and 28th.



Wimbledon Championships

Wimbledon, as you probably know, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world. Played on grass courts, these games have been held in the London suburb of Wimbledon since 1877 at the All England Club. It is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments and takes place in June and July for 14 days ever year.

In the 2008 Men's Singles tournament, Rafael Nadal defeated the current Wimbledon champion, Roger Federer. It was the longest championship match in Wimbledon history, with the total event lasting over seven hours.



London Film Festival


The London Film Festival is an annual week-long event that showcases films from around the world and in London. Anybody can purchase tickets to see screenings of these movies. 2008 was the festival's 52nd year. Actors, writers and filmmakers gather during this time in order to celebrate and share their love of film!



Reading and Leeds Festival

Reading and Leeds are two cities within England which hold a pair of annual music festivals together. The events take place on the long weekend of the August bank holiday. The Reading Festival is the world's oldest pop music festival that still exists. There are several stages and the twin sites include various genres of music. Originally a jazz festival, the current music which tends to dominate the festival today is rock, indie, alternative and punk.

In 1992, Nirvana played their last UK concert here. It was here where Kurt Cobain infamously came on stage in a wheelchair, making fun of rumours about his mental health.



Homecoming Scotland 2009

Homecoming Scotland is a year-long celebration in 2009 throughout the country of Scotland. It is in honour of Robert Burns, and celebrates some of Scotland's greatest contributions - golf, whisky, great Scottish minds and inventions, as well as the counry's rich culture and heritage. If you play to visit, study or live in Scotland in 2009, this will be a great year for you! There are over 100 events planned!

Famous Scots include John Logie Baird (inventor of the telvision), Robert Louis Stevenson (author of "Treasure Island" and "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde") and Sir William Wallace.



Frieze Art Fair


The Frieze Art Fair is one of the U.K.'s largest new art fairs. It takes place every October in Regent's Park, London, featuring over 150 contemporary art galleries. Indulge your visual senses and see what kind of creativity and innovation you can experience here! Other awesome events which are part of the fair include special commissioned art projects, a prestigious talks programme about art, and an education schedule. In 2007, about 68,000 visits were made to the contemporary arts fair.




Notting Hill Carnival

The Notting Hill is the largest street carnival in the entire continent of Europe! It has become a large part of English culture and began in 1964. It takes place in Notting Hill, London, UK each August. There are parades and dancers, as well as steelpan drums.

This carnival celebrates the diversity and culture of Britain, particularly the Caribbean community. Colourful costumes and tropical rhythms are everywhere at this fun festival!




We haven't even begun to describe the number of things you can do in the United Kingdom! With the range of sports, music, arts and culture available in the U.K., you're bound to find something for you. The U.K. also celebrates many holidays that you may find unique to their culture - such as Guy Fawkes Day, a bonfire night held on the 5th of every November which celebrates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

One thing is for sure - you'll never run out of things to do in the U.K.!
