English as
a Second Language
UNB
is pleased to offer a wide range of English as a Second Language
(ESL) programs. Courses and options are available on both campuses
to meet the needs of all students wishing to acquire or improve
their ESL skills.
Each year, UNB attracts students
from over 70 different countries, all of them bringing a
different perspective. As an ESL student,
you'll have a chance to meet and work with these individuals and
the opportunity to learn about differences in cultures, languages,
and societies.
UNB Fredericton
UNB Fredericton's English Language Programme was
established in 1953 and is unique in design and delivery. This
program, exclusive to the Fredericton Campus, has a tradition of
ESL expertise with international
clientele, and is a Charter Member of the Council of Second
Language Programs in Canada.
For those interested in studying English only, UNB Fredericton offers the highly respected
SUBMARINE© Immersion
program.
SUBMARINE Immersion participants must
sign a Pledge to function only in English for the entire period of
enrollment. This Pledge, the cornerstone of the UNB English Language Programme, is the key to over
five decades of success with the total intense immersion
method.
September
to April: Three-week Total Intense SUBMARINE© Immersion sessions (modules), non-stop,
seven days per week and includes individualized attention,
personalized scheduling, tuition (which includes morning classes,
afternoon classes, evening/weekend tutorials, workshops/
activities/socio-cultural component seven days a week), course
materials, meals, and accommodations with an English family.
International clients are advised to take a minimum of two
three-week modules.
May to
August: Five-week Total Intense SUBMARINE© Immersion sessions, non-stop, seven days
per week. This program includes morning classes, afternoon classes,
evening/ weekend tutorials, workshops/activities/ socio-cultural
component seven days a week), text materials, meals, and
accommodations (double occupancy) in university residences which
form a Language House Community complete with residential
ELP staff members.
July to
August: Four-week session for High School students only.
Also a non-stop, seven days per week format and includes morning
classes, afternoon classes, evening/weekend tutorials, workshops/
activities/socio-cultural component seven days a week), text
materials, meals, accommodations (double occupancy) in university
residences which form a Language House Community complete with
residential ELP staff members.
All
SUBMARINE© Immersion formats have the
following features: quality control management throughout the
experience, residential approach where clients live in English
while learning, non-stop curriculum where learning takes place
days, nights and weekends, environmental classrooms where teaching
is extended into the community, and portability where techniques
for continued post-course development are provided.
English Language
classes are available on a weekly basis from September to April for
10, 15, 21, 25, and 30 hours per week. An Intensive English Term
format (23 hours per week for 14 weeks (September - December;
January - April) is also available.
UNB Saint John
Saint John College
is located on the Saint John Campus of UNB and offers a variety of programs designed
to prepare students for academic study at UNB and throughout North America.
Whether students
want to prepare for studying at an English-language university, or
to simply acquire language skills for the adventure and freedom
that learning a new language can provide, Saint John College has
English as a Second Language (ESL) program that can help them reach
their goals.
To
ensure a quality educational experience, all Saint John College
classes are limited to no more than 15 students (maximum of 20 for
ESL Support). All full-time programs are
based on 14-week semesters.
Saint John
College's 5-week Business English and Culture Program is designed
as an English preparation course for those entering UNB Saint John's 12-month Master of Business
Administration Program and for people from the business community.
The program focuses on learning advanced business communication
skills in an English context.
