MUSIC IN THE UK! |
OASISOasis is often compared to The Beatles. They've put out numerous musical albums and tour worldwide. They were formed in Manchester in 1991. Two famous brothers who play in the band are Liam and Noel Gallagher. Their latest records include Don't Believe the Truth (2005) and Dig Out Your Soul (2008). Oasis is most definitely influenced by the Beatles. In fact, they often draw comparison to the Fab Four. The British media call this more of an obsession than an influence. In turn, Oasis has inspired bands such as Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, The Coral and Kasabian. |

ZEPPELINLed Zeppelin was an English rock band that was formed back in 1968. Its band members included Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham. They are often considered the "first heavy metal band", but their style transcends many genres. The band was formed in London, England. They also reunited after many years on December 10, 2007 at the Ahmet Ertegün Tribute Concert at The O2 Arena in London. |
COLDPLAYColdplay is another British alternative rock band. One of the new bands, they were formed in London, England in 1998. The lead singer is Chris Martin. They have sold over 40 million records and are active supporters of various political and social causes. Many of their videos display the beauty and diversity of the British landscape. For example, the music video for "Yellow" was filmed at Studland Bay, a small village in the isle of Dorset. The video for "The Scientist" was filmed in London and the Bourne Woods, Surrey.
If you ever study in the UK, make sure you
check out these locations where the band has filmed their
music videos! The video for "Fix You" includes Chris
wandering near the London Bridge Station and across
Waterloo Bridge. The end of the video also shows the band
performing live at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton,
England. |
These are 3 major bands in the UK, but there are so many more that I haven't even begun to scratch the surface yet! British rock is quite unique - it was born out of rock and roll and rhythm and blues, but usually has faster drive and urgency than its American counterpart. Check out Super Furry Animals, Supergrass, Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, Maxïmo Park, Bloc Party, Muse, Franz Ferdinand and Snow Patrol if you'd like to listen to some modern Brit music.
Music is an integral part of a culture. Put on some awesome beats while you study for your exams in the UK! Got any favourite British rock bands?
