Ten Things you Didn't Know About the IELTS

If your dream is to study overseas, chances are you'll to be take an English proficiency exam, and submit that score with your application.

But before we get into your best survival tips, here is the basic information you need to know.

2. The test was first created in 1989

3. The exam is co-managed by The University of Cambridge, The British Council, and IDP Education Australia.

4. There are 4 sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking.

5. The test is broken into two strands General and Academic - and you can only write one at a time!

6. Total test time: 2 hours, 45 minutes.

7. Listening, Reading, and Writing are always completed in that order, and on the same day. Depending on the test centre, you may be allowed to complete the Speaking section of the exam up to seven days before, or after the other sections.

9. Test takers are graded and placed on a scale from 1 (Non User) to 9 (Expert User) - most university requirements fall between 5.5 and 7.0 of the academic strand.

10. In 2007, the top 5 language-speaking groups for the Academic strand of the IELTS were:
Tagalog
Spanish
Hindi
Malay
Tamil

    Hi swadhina,

    Academic stand is the type in which the applicant is tested to confirm whether he/she is capable to pursue his/her education in an english speaking country.

    General strand is the type in which the applicant is tested for purposes other than education.(like imigration, job,etc)
