AIEEE Overview

AIEEE, the exam that holds the key to future for thousands of students every year is scheduled to be held on 26th April 2009 this year. So, how well are you prepared to take the exam? You already might know the answer to this question if you have been attending coaching class!

Getting back to the point, AIEEE consists of two papers. The first one, taken by lakhs of students each year is for admission to the B.Tech/B.E. branch of the participating colleges. The second paper is for admission to the Architecture stream of participating colleges. You can get hold of the list of participating colleges from the official AIEEE website or the brochure. This list is subject to change at the time of counseling but there are mostly additions to it and rarely have colleges withdrawn from the list.

Giving both the papers is not compulsorily and depends on your interest. If you are interested in only BE./B.Tech, then you can just register for the first paper and run back home early after giving the examination. You can give both the papers if you want, so its kind of flexible. Both the papers are of three hours each. The first paper ie. B.E./B.Tech paper consists of three sections; Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics while the second paper for Architecture has Mathematics, Aptitude Test, Drawing Test as its three sections.

Moving over the elementary stuff which you can read from the brochure/AIEEE website, lets get down to the structure of the paper. I will be discussing the first paper in detail as it concerns the majority of the students. All the three sections have multiple choice questions. The syllabus is very similar to the CBSE Board Exams but there are a few topics in addition to them too, so check the syllabus in detail and make a note of additional topics. A couple of questions from there and you can gain advantage over those who have not studied them.

Now, many of the students do not read up the instructions before going to the examination hall. One such instruction is to use ball-point pen while marking the answers on the OMR-sheet. Its trivial and you might say, what's the big deal, we get to know that before starting the exam. BUT, the moment you mark the wrong answer and realize your mistake, its too late to do anything! There is no way you can avoid negative marking, leave aside assigning the correct choice to the question. Please do not use white markers, erasers and other such stuff as they damage the OMR sheet.

Another important thing to remember is not to throw away the admit card in joy or sorrow after the exam as it is required at the time of counseling. The counseling of AIEEE is a complex process and there are various aspects of it which you need to know before going in for the counseling. I will discuss those after the AIEEE exam which would be the best time for it. Flipping through the AIEEE brochure once isn't a bad idea at all.

To be frank, I too don’t know much about the B.Arch exam as I did not appear for it myself. One thing though, there are some really good books available that can help you prepare for the B.Arch exam.
