IIT-JEE Preparation : A different ballgame

IIT, the dream college for any engineering aspirant, had made its entrance examination JEE simpler a couple of years ago. It did away with the non-objective type paper a couple of years ago. The change was meant to simplify the paper and reduce the dependence on coaching classes that have mushroomed in every nook and corner of the country.

It did help achieve the first objective comprehensively but that hasn't stopped students from joining coaching classes. I will discuss the impact of coaching classes in a different article. JEE was reduced to a single day exam with two papers each of 3 hours having all the three subjects.

So has the pattern change brought down the difficulty of the paper? I would beg to differ. Although it has changed the aspect of the paper, it still remains the toughest engineering entrance exam to crack. The new pattern isn't just multiple choice questions but also has match the following and comprehension type questions. This not only increases the toughness of the paper but also tests the in-depth knowledge of the students.

IIT-JEE preparation is completely different from AIEEE or other entrance exam preparation. The reason for the same lies in the fact that you need to eliminate three incorrect choices in JEE paper rather than fine the correct one, something you would do in other entrance exams. This approach requires you to have thorough knowledge of the subject to be able to quickly spot the wrong choices.

Most of the students complain about the lack of time to complete the JEE paper. Each three hour paper has 66 questions that leave you with approximately 3 minutes to complete each question. Considering the chemistry section is easier and requires less time, you have sufficient time to attempt the rest of the two sections. But one needs to have the right approach while attempting the questions to save time.

Match the following type questions are most time taking as they are essentially six questions combined into one. They also carry the maximum marks per question that makes them more important than others. Assertion-reason type questions are tricky questions and are meant to confuse the students. They require lot of practice to develop the skills and ability to solve them quickly in the exam. These are not tough question but test your speed and knowledge.

With the change in pattern, you now do not need to solve the lengthy mind boggling problems that were the essence of the main exam in the old pattern. The need of the hour is to have in-depth knowledge of the subject with strong hold on fundamentals. Following the right books is very important; consult your teachers regarding the same.

JEE preparation is no longer as tough as it used to be that has opened up the avenue for a lot more students to crack the exam. One needs to be dedicated and hard working while preparing for the exam and remain focused throughout. And it won't be long before you would be stepping in to your dream college!

I dont thnk by removing the subjective type question they have simplified d paper ,they have just made the paper checking easier for them but this has made “luck” play an important role in the result .U have a 25% prob. that your answer is right even if its guessed nad we all know how much difference 3 marks can make to your rank. With subjective q. as the criteria for iit jee rank this wouldnt have been the case..

Changing the pattern has made the competition tougher but at the same time it has provided an opportunity to multi-dimensional people to crack the exam which wasn’t the case earlier. Luck is always a factor in MCQ questions and was there earlier too with the old pattern in the screening test.

JEE preparation has become a bit more on the lines of AIEEE after pattern change. One thing though, getting in to IIT has only become tougher.
