IHMs v/s Private Colleges

  1. Introduction:

About IHMs: There are around 24 IHM all over the country based on different region. They are run by the national council. These are the government collages with an approval from AICTE, they have same syllabus from all the IHM.

About Private colleges: They are run by private organization. Like Taj group of hotels have their own institute in Aurangabad or Welcome group has their institute in Manipal as WAKSHA.

  2. Admission Procedure:

IHMs: For getting into National Institute of Hotel Management there is a Joint entrance Examination 'JEE' conducted by national council every year in the month of April or May, the students have to clear this exam and they can get admission in IHM according to their rankings and seats availability of particular college.

Private Institutes: They conduct their own exam for admission; some of the colleges also include personal interviews as a part of their selection procedure.

  3. Duration:

The degree course in IHM is about three year with six month of internship in all major departments.

Private college duration is of four years which has one year of internship.

  4. Fee structure:

In IHM the fee is around one lakhs fifty thousand

In private college it reaches up to four lakhs differs from college to college.

  5. Training Programs:

Some of the private hotel management institutes have tie up with other foreign universities so they run their exchange program, they send their students abroad to learn or for internship.

In IHM this facility is not available though they are coming up with this concept. Recently IHM Bangalore has tied up with some Australian University.

  6. Placement:

There is a provision for campus placement for the students studying in IHM as well as in private college. However, the private college students have an advantage of getting placed in their own group of hotel for e.g. student studying in Oberoi School has more opportunity of getting placed in Oberoi hotels as compared to other IHM students.

  7. Specialization:

As the private institute offers four year program so it includes one year for specialization in one of the major department but IHM does not have any such provision.
