Learning Process

What makes learning effective? According to Garrison and Vaughn (2008), online and face-to-face learning must be "purposeful and reflective" ( p. 31). For learning to be effective, the learner must feel a sense of belonging to a community of inquiry where he or she is safe to interact with the course instructor, other students in the course, and the course material. Garrison and Vaughn (2008) suggested cognitive presence, social presence, and teaching presence to assure student motivation and engagement in the learning process. Social presence means creating "a climate of trust" (p. 33) in order to feel free to discuss issues without fear of being ridiculed, cognitive presence means experiencing knowledge via reflection, and teaching presence orchestrates both the social and the cognitive for effective learning. Blended learning provides an excellent framework for effective learning.

What is meant by blended learning? I work with Adults and small children. The Adults participate not only for the chance to learn English, but to be a part of a supportive community of learners. The small children are eager to make friends. Being part of a community is new to them. Some like it and some don’t.

Social presence and climate of trust are very important. As a middle school teacher, building relationships in order to build community and trust take precedent over academic endavors. The three Rs at my middle school are: Relationships, Relevance, Reading.

Thanks for making me aware of this new research. Norm and I work to build a climate of trust in all our teaching and training. It is essential if we are to learn and grow together, especially when you are working in a country other than your own.

I think what makes learning effective,is desire to learn.Without that a person will not invest their mind and energy into it.There must a desire for learning. Learning that is motivated from inside…brings joy.Not all learning has to be motivated by a bigger pay cheque…much learning in life is simply good for us and fun and might not bring monetary rewards, but it makes our life more intresting, more enjoyable and fancinating. I love learning new things.Since i was very young,i was self motivated to learn and it has been a great motivatior in my life.In every stage of my life,i have learned something new and I am glad.

RELATIONSHIP idea is good but it is not over learning. We need relationships but even if people do not have great sense of community around them, they can still enrich their life and find joy,in being active in the community and been part of a study on their own or in a group.

I think,we need many things…we need relationships. But,we also need to keep our minds active and if we do…we are happier and healthier in a long run.
