Indefeatable Rule of the English Language

As I was switching through different channels of my television, one thing that stuffed me with mortification was the language ruling over our minds- the great English language. Most of our channels are using western language and has engrossed it in our minds, that English is cool. I don’t have any grudge against any of these channels nor do against English but I have a bitter indignation against the way our minds have been moulded about English -the touted one-the next big thing.

English, although i personally feel that its an enlightening way to converse, is making the hegemony quite implicitly in our Indian intellect. The roots of the dialect is growing and making its way to the deepest of our systems. It makes me exasperated and despondent when i see people talking in English, judging others on how eloquently one can speak it. Some of my acquaintances feel strongly, you can detect how much one is deep under water is drive one to speak English. So if he fumbles, his pride falls to pieces. The reaction comes flowing,' Oh...my god...he does not know the crucial language... pity... pity…’

I have sensed this because of the incidents that took place in front of me when one who was an quintessential English speaker treats the other who is not too good at it like a rustic. One who speaks well rules the social circle and the other becomes the underdog who has to rise. This may not be discernible to all, may not even to those who are reading this may feel this is a kind of joke i am cracking. But, the rule of this language is conspicuous, though it works in a subtle manner. Your teacher at school, your mates at college and your colleagues in office, all of them nags you to speak it well. And of course yes, you feel I am cursed-English does not come naturally to me. So, the ones who are not good at it should not lose their heart ,as we have our national language 'HINDI' ,though in a much dilapidated state, its rickety stature makes us run away from it.

Students preferring to study English rather than going for Hindi, is a true and a clear cut bang on our faces. We should certainly not forget that we are Indians and must feel proud of our mother tongue as the west feels. It’s not a moral speech but it’s just to brush the dusty chords of our Hindi. Why all this unfair conduct with Hindi? Its true that west is awe inspiring and we are nonetheless getting influenced. So, the fissures lie in our cerebral part, not the west.

The domination of English is not easy to do away with because the colonizers as they say went but left English as a language to hover above our heads. Colonial language makes us slaves of it and we are without any qualms worshipping it but this self division between our oral culture which is Hindi and the written which is English. It confirms that Indians are suffering from a massive psychological complex and therefore, they are turning to English as their savior. Surely, you see, practically this is impossible to throw English out of our lives, as it is an epidemic in huge proportion. Still I am not satisfied and i think that what is the point of chasing the language? Why are we imitating the west, looking up to it as if it the eternal god? The abuses that we hurl at each other in Hindi seem to us like a normal thing when spoken in English. F**K is certainly a common word, but the meaning behind it, surely gets undermined when we speak it out, it becomes sacred.

People are running after English learning classes just to raise their status. The songs in Hindi we consider are low class, cheap and uncool. Linkin park, Iron maiden, Enrique is the one we hail and run after. Why is such attitude of otherness with our mother tongue? For the mentioning purpose, let me show you ironies that till now you must have caught hold of. The whole article is in English. So, finally you can laugh at me... what is this crap that I am talking about... endorsing Hindi and writing in English. But, this is for the upholders of English, that they must not be flamboyant about their supposed superior position than others. It was just that you got a taste of your own medicine. Hope, it shakes up a bit of your thinking, and you are a bit modest in approaching the 'illiterate'.
