International Student Testimonial

Ismail Abu Arafeh
BA, '07
International Studies
Immediately after graduating from high school in his native Palestine, Ismail Abu Arafeh did not have a specific plan his mind. However, he had a strong desire to study abroad especially in the United States. Based on that, he started searching and exploring his opportunities and became determined to fulfill those desires.

Due to the cost of studying abroad, Ismail had to apply for scholarships. He contacted different universities and explained his situation. "Few universities contacted me with their admission and financial aid information. At DU, there was a great opportunity in which Palestinian and Israeli students could receive a scholarship for their undergraduate education. I applied at the University of Denver and two months later I got the letter of acceptance."

During his freshman year, Ismail participated in the Wellness Living and Learning Community and became involved in many of their programs and activities. He also joined the Theta Chi Fraternity. Before the end of his freshman year, Ismail became the president of the I-Team (International Orientation Team), a student run organization devoted to help international students and make their transition to the United States and specifically to DU a smooth and successful one.

Ismail enjoyed his relationship with his DU professors. "DU professors are generally very supportive of their students. I remember when I first got here; one of my main challenges was speaking in class. In my first class, the professor supported and encouraged me both in and out of class." Besides motivation and encouragement, some professors even offered their time and effort outside class, included writing recommendation letters, discussing personal issues, or engaging in intellectual discussions. "At the University of Denver, professors are seen as supportive friends rather than merely teachers" says Ismail.
