I am a ...

When people refer to themselves they often use the phrase, "I am a ...", followed by what their sun sign.

This lesson will introduce or re-confirm the 12 sign of the zodiac which are used to describe sun signs.

Aries, Taurus, and Gemini;
Cancer, Leo, and Virgo;
Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius;
Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.

What do I mean by "sun sign"?

Sun sign is the phrase used to describe the sign of the zodiac where the sun was located when you were born.  It is understood to be interchangeable with the phrases "I am a ..." and "My sign is ...".

So if you were born between spring equinox and summer solstice, your sun sign is one of:
Aries, Taurus, and Gemini.

If you were born between summer solstice and autumn equinox, your sun sign is the the group consisting of:
Cancer, Leo, and Virgo.

If your date of birth is between autumn equinox and winter solstice, your sun sign is found in one of:
Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius.

And if you were born between winter solstice and spring equinox, your sun sign is one of:
Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.

Roughly the position of the sun changes zodiac signs with predictable regularity.*  This means that we can use the calander to determine the sun's approximate location in the band of zodiac signs encircling the earth.  Because of the even velocity, we can say that the sun usually changes signs on or about the 22 day of each month.

Which means:
22 of March to 21 of April -- sun sign is Aries
22 of April to 21 of May -- sun sign is Taurus
22 of May to 21 of June -- sun sign is Gemini
22 of June to 21 of July -- sun sign is Cancer
22 of July to 21 of August -- sun sign is Leo
22 of August to 21 of September -- sun sign is Virgo
22 of September to 21 of October -- sun sign is Libra
22 of October to 21 of November -- sun sign is Scorpio
22 of November to 21 of December -- sun sign is Sagittarius
22 of December to 21 of January -- sun sign is Capricorn
22 of January to 21 of February -- sun sign is Aquarius
22 of February to 21 of March -- sun sign is Pisces

These are approximations.  The only way of knowing where the sun really is in the sky is by evaluating the sun's position.  That is too complicated for a basic introduction.

Hope you enjoyed this lesson,
Anita.

*relative to the perspective of the earth.  I am well aware that the earth orbits the sun.  For the flow of astrological explanation, I will use terms that describe planetary changes relative to the perspective of the earth.
