From the discussion SAT subject tests prep books

I personally feel that Barron’s is the best…. Barron’s 2400 which is only available in the United States is the best for SAT prep. It is worth ordering this book, all the way from the States ( I did that! ). Barron’s flashcards really work wonders. Also, I think you should keep the Kaplan and Princeton book for practice after you are thorough with the Barron’s book. This is all the advice i have to give to you.

hi amitnaveen,
I really think you should join the SAT Prep and the TOEFL Prep community. You should add some of the top authorities as your contacts and consult them for any queries or doubts. You should also try purchasing some good books which might help you in your preparation. Also, self-prepared flashcards really work wonders so, once you start off with your preparation you should jot down the important points in flashcards and use them as your resources.

From the lesson Commonly Mistaken "D" Words
Fri, 08 Aug 2008 13:32:09 -0000
Ok, first you should get the meaning clear: DISCREET means showing prudence, restraint or circumspection in speech or behavior, DISCRETE means distinct, separate.
Take for example a DISCREET man who suddenly gets a brutal attack of sever stomach pain, in the middle of a party, this DISCREET man will not create a scene in front of people, instead he will quietly go to the hotel reception and ask for a pain killer and be up and about as soon as possible.
Now, suppose if after his conversation with the receptionist, he is provided with several different types of medicines to choose from, each with a different side-effect, size and color: he will now have to choose from a set of DISCRETE medicines.
So, discrete and discreet actually have very different meanings and are used in different contexts. I hope this will help you! If you still have a query I will try to explain this better…

You both are right practice does make a man perfect and i think if we are regular at writing essays we can probably do all that i said in those 25 minutes.
Also i believe we should always write the essay on a topic about which we are fully convinced, because if we ourselves are wavering from the topic we can never convince the examiner!

You’re right Astha, it’s important to stick to one side of an argument and not waver from it, otherwise you’d end up with a non-convincing, weak essay. Even if you don’t really believe with an opinion or even care about the subject, you should pretend you do and choose one side in order to write a good essay.

Mind…..if i add in?
An ideal essay according to me: is focused; is logical; is clear; is well-structured; is deeply–argumentative; grabs the reader’s interest from the first lines; does not pad; provides illustrative evidence; gives credits to sources.

I agree about your points Astha! However, they’re hard to accomplish, especially in a 25-minutes SAT essay which is very stressful.
My advice is- practice. That’s the only way to be ready and prepared. If you practice enough you’ll be able to time yourself perfectly so that you can plan an essay, come up with fast ideas, put them in writing, and even save a couple of minutes for last minute revisions. Practice makes perfect!

From the discussion Math or English- which is the harder part?
Wed, 16 Jul 2008 07:26:33 -0000
Hi, you are right english is the tougher part definitely. The vocabulary seems to be endless. At least in Maths the formulas and numerical tricks are limited!!! Also different spellings for Canadian, British and American English add to the trouble!

Sun, 13 Jul 2008 11:58:53 -0000
Aarushi you are right… actually they are two separate rules but for convenience i merged both! The property is as follows: The triangle can have 2 corresponding angles equal and the side in between them equal or any other side equal. For further clarification look up these links: http://www.mathopenref.com/congruentaas.html.
