  1. From the discussion Dream Careers

Sure, we all want to get paid “for not doing nothing”. But poor grammar aside, the only a tiny minority of people ever get by doing very little.

I think my dream job would be the CEO of a large, well respected company. Where my decisions were respected and they guided the company to success.

On the other hand, I guess getting paid to post on a glorified blog would be pretty decent too.

Tip #15: If you are having trouble sleeping and or getting the proper amount of sleep, it may be best to sleep alone. Sleep generally moderates alot of your body so that you can be calm and relaxed for the majority of the day. If you find yourself becoming aggravated quickly it may be due to lack of sleep. Or not.

  5. From the trivia question Government regulation of industry in Canada is...

    Tue, 19 Aug 2008 03:35:04 -0000

I would have to say that given the amount of new rules our own governments put in place (or try to) each year, that it would be much harder to do business or to operate in an industrial sense.

Especially in Canada there really is a lack of coaching at. We have talent, and Soccer Canada eats up a good 60 million a year, but we cant even buy decent coaches here. All our best players go to Europe, aka Hargreaves when they are very young. Alot of Canadian players also end up in their home country, so we have a number in the Turkish leagues and a few in the Dutch leagues.

I would have to say that the number one reason why certain countries are far and beyond others is that they provide excellent funding to their athletes. Take for example the United States. Their population is around 10x that of Canada at all times, but in summer Olympics, they take far more medals than Canada does. They fund them entirely, whereas in Canada alot of the top athletes have to rely on steady income from a working job to sustain their lives. Its obscene the amount the US spends on just winning medals.

  11. From the lesson Top 10 Job Interview Disasters

    Sun, 15 Jun 2008 17:16:19 -0000

My personal favourite was when I was working for Tim Horton and I was just sitting in on an interview to get a feel for the prospective employee. As the questions started focusing on the uniform the candidate asked my young female manager “what she normally wears underneath her uniform”. At that point, I blurted out in laughter and she got very red faced. The candidate was likely aiming for something more like “What do you find is comfortable to wear in combination with the uniform?” but was so nervous that it came out very awkwardly. Be calm, and relax! If you act like that in 1-on-1 situations, how are you going to deal with an angry customer or a strict time deadlines?

Not quite versed on that many exotic plants, I can suggest that you fill a spray bottle with cool liquid and just after work or early afternoon, give your plants that appear to get heat shock the easiest a quick cool down. Whats key is to do it early enough so that the moisture evaporates or is absorbed by the plant because if you leave moisture on the leaves overnight and frequently you can put you plant at great risk of disease. Lightly dust the petals ever so gently.

  13. From the discussion My Favourite Indoor Plant

    Sat, 14 Jun 2008 07:33:54 -0000

A great plant to always have in either the work or at home is the Aloe plant. It grows very easily without too much potting soil. It is a low maintenance plant and serves a real use aside from being imposing with its self made defenses. At home, having an aloe plant can serve as a quick first aid kit. Aloe is used in most after-burn products and now-a-days is even featured in bottled drinks! Just snap off a small stock from your plant and squeeze the gel out of the plant onto the afflicted area. At work, the Aloe plant also serves as a first aid kit. Get a nasty papercut or worse (at my workplace)? Well, dab some Aloe onto your wound and it will quickly calm the cut and help it heal much faster so you don’t have to fill out any WSIB forms.

  14. From the discussion Favorite Outdoor Plant

    Sat, 14 Jun 2008 07:24:02 -0000

My favourite outdoor plant is so boring most people often overlook it because they see many more colourful and attractive plants. However, in my mind its a case of simple but intricate beauty. In particular I chose the Japanese painted fern, as its a small plant, but at the same time is made up of two colours, generally white with a green rim around the leaf. The fern also grows in a terribly interesting way! It unrolls! Yes, I know, how does a plant unroll? It is called circinate vernation. If you can imagine your arm as the branch and your fingers as the leaves themselves. While clenching your hands, touch your fists to your shoulders and slowly completely uncoil your arms and gradually unclench your hands. This mimics what the fern does. So even if I failed to paint the picture best, you can Google it quickly and Im sure that my favourite outdoor plant will appear.

  15. From the discussion Overwatering / Underwatering

    Sat, 14 Jun 2008 07:03:54 -0000

There are a number of characteristics about your individual plant that change dramatically based on the amount of water it is provided. First and foremost is the root system. If you are trying to give a plant a chance to grow to the suggested potential in height and density then you must water the plant infrequently. The basis behind this is that if you water it more frequently the roots will not have to dive deeply into the pot or soil base because water is readily available at the surface. It is important for a plant to root deeply so that it can weather well, and is not prone to as many diseases, rot or decay. A shallow rooting plant can also choke itself in a myriad of roots causing some portions of your plant to die slowly or sometimes suddenly.

Also take into account that many plants are meant for more arid climates and need less water. Please research your plant, so that you know if you can water the flower, the stem and the base, or just the surrounding soil. This is key for alot of the more main stream flowers, like roses.

As Anteaya says drainage is also very important. When your pot has drainage beneath it excess water leaks out the bottom. This mimics the water table, as you can always re-use that water again and again. A plant that has good drainage will not suffer root rot as the water becomes turgid, nor will it choke itself easily as the roots can explore the entire pot rather than just the surface as mentioned above. You can also water it less in terms of frequency but the same in terms of actually water given to the plant.

My “rule of thumb” is to scrape the surface of the soil and look to see if just below the surface there is moist but not soaked soil. You are looking for the consistency of a damp sponge as the soil should always able to take much more moisture than is generally necessary for indoor plants to thrive.
