  3. From the lesson Passive Voice

    Tue, 18 Nov 2008 23:18:35 -0000

    I think so.

    Active: “This lesson impressed oLahav.” Passive: “oLahav was impressed by this lesson.”

    I use the passive voice all the time… I really should stop.

    We should note though, that using the passive voice is actually not grammatically incorrect, it just sounds a lot worse and should not be used.

    One thing that seems big right now is recruiting from emerging markets, like India & China. I bet that didn’t happen a lot 25 years ago.

  12. From the lesson Challenges in journalism

    Tue, 28 Oct 2008 16:13:27 -0000

    In the US, journalism as you describe is under attack by editorialized reporting. Consider the 2 most popular news shows: Keith Olbermann’s “Countdown”, on MSNBC, and Bill O’Reilley’s “O’Reilley Factor”, on Fox.

    They are both hyper-political… switching between their coverage of the 2008 US election, you’d think they were talking about 2 completely different presidential races.

  15. From the discussion What is Your Markup Style?

    Thu, 23 Oct 2008 20:57:14 -0000

    Dude, I protest! That would lead to a lot more markup… God made heading tags that can have classes for a reason. I don’t think its the least bit unreadable.

    I’m curious to know how you think writing the CSS selectors for these is easier…

    /* You: */
    div.content-block-title h3 {...}

    versus

    /* Me: */

  20. From the trivia question What was the first computer?

    Mon, 20 Oct 2008 19:55:08 -0000

    I got it right!

    I almost went with Pascal’s adder, but I didn’t think that qualified as a computer.
