Hi All-I would also like to add my sincere thank you to you all for making and sending this wonderful video. I have watched it numerous times and have sent it to many friends. We are back to Germany today, but when home on May 24th, will attempt to make one for you. Makes me realize how much I miss you all:( Hugs, k xxx
Some very thoughtful and important suggestions that I had never really considered, in particular, standing during the phone interview. It alters everything-your voice, as you mentioned as you breathe more deeply. But as well, you really do feel more alert and on top of things. No jewelry on ears is a great tip too. It really is annoying and distracting!! I recently did a phone interview for a volunteer position for the 2010 Olympics, and will do another one shortly. I am very used to public speaking, but the lack of face to face contact left me less sure of myself. I ill re-read this great list and I will indeed smile and use a mirror. Thanks a lot!!

Need more background on the testing-sample-size and demographics:number and type of questions:time of day administered: data analysis- and so on….. Very interesting study…..then there is the whole area of emotional intelligence…..as important?? measurable?? correlation to employment or IQ??
Thought that it was cheerful-but thanks for the comment!! Valid!! Glad you are enjoying the community. We are working on some new material right now that I hope you enjoy:)
Lucyinthesky-you are very correct that shy students have trouble sharing in groups-sometimes even in a pair. My experience has been that they are more likely to share in a pair than in a larger group. It is hard to get left out of a pair. As well, there are several things that you can do to give the student more confidence. If the student is old enough to write(pictures are great for the younger ones), Allow them to prepare for the conversation by thinkong and writing befor pairing up to share(Think-Write-Pair-Share) This individual time to think and write allows all students to get ready-provbiding more confidence. Even having a prop(the piece of paper in their hand) helps, As they can look at the paper when speaking if eye contact is a real challenge. Thanks for your very valid comments-you are obviously sensitive to those who do not like public speaking. That is a very valid comment as it is cited as one of the most feared things in the world.
Babceo you make some very valid points. You are very correct in saying that the set up of the groups and making the guidelines transparent and understandable is really crucial. The whole heterogeneity/homogeneity issue is huge and there is not one good answer. It depends on the age of the students, the level of their soft skills, the academic task, the time that you have and so on. I absolutely agree with your concluding statements!! Just because you put people in a group does not mean that they will work as a team. Sometimes, initially, when you do not know your students or their skill level well, you need to use random groups, and careful observation. As well, you need to, with the class, prioritize and make visible the cladd rules and accepted behaviour. When my husband and I start training with teachers in new instructional strategies we always say, “Start small and think build.” There is training and a continuum of skill building needed before groups work efficiently. Thanks for your comments. Obviously from a seasoned teacher. Maybe you would care to share some specifics as to how you begin with a new group-some activities that you use and like:)
I come to learnhub to play whenever I have a few minutes. There is so much here that I have not had time to enjoy. Found 2 great videos lately that I use in my training in CL>Having fun and gets me away from the frustration of the US election!!
Thanks for making me aware of this new research. Norm and I work to build a climate of trust in all our teaching and training. It is essential if we are to learn and grow together, especially when you are working in a country other than your own.
Love this Tatyana.
Sounds like a great day!! Super. Certainly a busy one!! Let us know how it went. Thanks a lot for posting it on learnhub. We will certainly send people to it!! Cheers, Kathy
Hey Aschulte-I never tire of the line-ups as well. I love it when I think up new ones that people enjoy. My newest value line-up had this question, ” Which is more important, Intelligence or Common sense?” We had a very interesting discussion after I folded the line. Then I formed the groups from the folded line-gave a good variety of opinion in the group. Thanks for the blog. Kathy
I really enjoyed the relevance of this to cooperative learning. For good retention of new learning students ned to interact with the material at least twice and in 2 different ways(double loop learning). For example, if a teacher lectures, students have a much better chance of remembering if a good question is posed, the student has a chance to think about the question, write some ideas and then share these ideas with a partner. In this scenario the student is actually interacting with the material 4 times.
I agree with Schneewittchen- 5 fingers is very versatile and the students really enjoy it. I like the idea of using it for reflection and evaluation after a day’s lesson. It is easy to use and personal because you are tracing your own hand. Small photos of students can be added, and they can be used to post thank you comments from team mates.
Peter-This is just a great video. So wonderful to see the positive outcome of a good vision by the leader and the hard work of the teachers. Well done!!
