  1. From the lesson Seven Wonders of the Modern World: Golden Gate Bridge

My favorite place to view the bridge is from the Marin Headlands. You can see it from above at Battery Spencer:

Or you can see if from below at Kirby Cove (a 30 minute hike).

    Here is a map.

  2. From the discussion MARS EXPLORATION

I think so. Space exploration hasn’t been a huge priority yet because we have bigger problems on earth, but sooner or later it will become one. Mars is the first obvious choice…primarily since it is close and also the possibility of water/life.

  3. From the discussion Star Trek Movie - Love it or Hate it?

    Thu, 14 May 2009 20:25:19 -0000

I didn’t love it…but I didn’t hate it either! I thought the movie was great overall – lots of fun. However, it could have been better. Personally, I would have liked to see more dialog and character development. I never watched the original series, so I had no context for it. There was too much action and no time to really take it in.

Another criticism is the lack of strong female characters. I know the original cast was male-dominated, but couldn’t they have thrown in some women as the new characters? Perhaps an ambassador or two? At least make the bad guy a woman!

  5. From the trivia question George was a 76 year old man who lived a mansion that was 4 stories tall. His neighbor’s house is 2 stories tall. George’s brother is 59, and owns a shack that has 1 story, and it’s kitchen is 20 square feet. George is a pharmacist, and sells about 179 prescriptions a day. His brother is a doctor and deals with about 67 patients a day. How many syllables are in automatonophobia?

  6. From the discussion Should the US government own equity positions in financial institutions?

I don’t think the government should, unless the US wants to become a socialist state. Right now it is half-way between socialist and capitalist…which is far worse than either one. It encourages speculation because it provides a socialist safety net when big gambles don’t pay out.

    Wed, 04 Feb 2009 16:41:21 -0000

Of the 5 movies nominated for Best Picture I’ve seen 3.

Slumdog Millionaire: I really enjoyed this movie. It was difficult to watch at times, but had lots of energy and optimism, and a very clever story.

The Reader: I was not impressed. The supposed point of the story was the exploration of German guilt around the Holocaust, but all it conveyed to me was that Germans like to follow rules, so you couldn’t blame them for following orders. ?!? I found it completely confusing emotionally.

Frost/Nixon: I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It was incredibly acted, and very focused.

Drinking wine is only an addiction if you do it in copious amounts, everyday. A few glasses a week is not addictive. I would say the typical Indian diet, rich in refined flours and fried food is a lot more detrimental to your health than a glass of red wine several times a week. Let’s not even get started on the typical American diet!

  13. From the lesson Business Etiquette Training: An Indian reveals ...

    Mon, 29 Dec 2008 23:37:53 -0000

Canadians are a more conservative/risk averse version of Americans when it comes to business. This is both good and bad in my opinion. Good because we aren’t experiencing a housing bust like the US because our banking system is a lot more regulated. Bad because we don’t experience the same economic highs.

In the end, however, someone coming from India would be hard-pressed to notice differences between Canadians and Americans, especially if they stayed in large cities.

Nickelback. He sounds like he’s constipated.

I dislike almost all country music.

Come to think of it…most music on the radio is unbearable – cookie cutter and predictable. I only listen to classical music on the radio since even when it’s bad, it is pleasantly bad.

I don’t much like country music either. And I completely agree with the radio comment, I never listen to the radio, ever. When I’m driving, I just listen to CDs (though that’s even more predictable, but at least I’m guaranteed to listen to what I like and not garbage).

  19. From the discussion The definition of art.

    Fri, 24 Oct 2008 15:31:18 -0000

I just had a debate about what art is last weekend with a friend of mine. He was describing a piece of art by an artist who just won a prestigious prize that sounded more like an innovative process rather than art to me. I have included the image. It is by Jeremy Hof, and called “Layer Painting Red”.

He won the prize because he impressed the judges with his mathematical approach toward painting that reveals itself upon close inspection. According to the judging panel, “What appeared to be a two-dimensional surface revealed itself as a three-dimensional, layered structure, confounding our understanding of what a traditional painting is.”

Is this art? Perhaps. Does it deserve a prestigious prize? The judges said it won because it confounded their understanding of painting. For me, innovation for innovation’s sake is not does not contribute to art’s greatness.
