  1. From the discussion What's the need....?

    Thu, 09 Oct 2008 21:17:28 -0000

Some wines can go with Indian food. You’d have to stick with very crisp white wines (like a pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc).

Zwitten, I am a big wine drinker. It is pretty much the only alcoholic beverage I drink. I would say I enjoy it because finding a good wine is like hunting. There are so many out there and no two are alike. It provides constant entertainment because of this. Not only are there different wine regions (France, Italy, USA…even Canada!), but you need to navigate different grape varieties, different blends, different years… It really is a lot to learn which adds to the pleasure.

In Indian general societies, drinking wine is supposed to be an addiction. According to our culture, we are told not to drink wine by our parents/elders. Same thing is taught to us in our schools also.

  4. From the lesson The Current US Financial Crisis

    Tue, 23 Sep 2008 20:05:11 -0000

Let’s not forget the whole sub-prime mortgage mess. People who had bad credit got loans because the institutions lending them the money packaged and sold off the debt to other institutions meaning they didn’t care if it was a good loan… That is how all the bad debt got collected.

I’m all for de-regulation as a general rule. However, when the financial system gets so complex that the market (ie the people who buy investments) can’t tell what is going on, you can’t rely on a laissez faire system.

  5. From the discussion Palin-Champion of Women?

    Fri, 19 Sep 2008 21:32:52 -0000

I am not impressed by McCain’s choice and I think it is pandering. It is also a huge strike against McCain’s judgement. I think the Economist put it best.

Palin is not fit to be Vice President as she does not have the experience. Does ANYONE really think she could be president? This is a question voters have to ask themselves much more so than with Joe Biden. McCain is OLD, and as Tina Faye said it, she is a heart-beat away from the presidency. An old, sickly heart-beat away.

The part that bugs me most is that she has eroded the strides made by Hillary Clinton. Hillary was qualified, and never used cliches like “hockey mom” to win sympathy votes. She did it all on competence. I sincerely hope the media exposes Palin for the inadequate candidate she is…

  6. From the discussion Should inactive communities be shut after a certain period?

    Fri, 12 Sep 2008 21:33:14 -0000

You do raise a good point though. What about EMPTY inactive communities? I think those should be deleted after communicating with the owner. Even though communities with more activity “bubble to the top”, users might find coming across empty inactive communities discouraging.

  7. From the lesson My 73 Wow Ideas - Would it not be great if ....? idea 25

    Mon, 08 Sep 2008 21:25:46 -0000

There are several sites that let you review service providers. When I lived in San Francisco I used Yelp religiously. I picked my dentist, my doctor, my hair dresser on Yelp.

Comparison shopping for services can be a little tricky though since not all services are equal like say a product is. You can compare the price of a 47 inch Sony TV very easily. Not so easy for say a pedicure. Is the pedicure an hour? 30 minutes? Does it include a massage? Exfoliation? A few too many permutations to make comparison easy.

That’s interesting, I didn’t know that…. Thanks a lot Malgosia. It’s good to know that someone is reading my stuff…. Well, I agree fully with you in terms of the difficulty in comparing various services and price changes might also occur more often than for a product I guess …..

They’re very finicky plants! My mom’s plant did the exact same thing. After loosing all of its initial blooms, she left it for a while and this season it sprung 4 new blooms! Now the question will be when to decide to water it again if it’s doing so well now!

  9. From the trivia question 6. Sentence Completion: Fill in the blank(s) by choosing the best word or set of words that fits within the context of the whole sentence.

The judge finally concluded that the accused would be ____________.

Unusual how? To absolve is to declare free of blame, guilt, or responsibility. It is most commonly used to mean “to set free” in a legal context.

I believe that’s dictated by the first letter of the acronym. It’s “an MBA” since the pronunciation is “em-bee-A” – starts with an “E”, a vowel.

Also, we never say “I was hit by AN LASER beam”. It’s always – I was hit by a LASER beam.

  11. From the discussion The Winter Olympics are more entertaining than the Summer Olympics

    Mon, 11 Aug 2008 21:04:17 -0000

I like the summer games because more countries participate. The winter games more or less require that you have a winter in your country… Also, more people watch the summer games, which makes it more fun.

In terms of attending the games – who wants to stand out in the cold for hours?

  13. From the lesson The 10 worst things to do in a meeting

    Mon, 11 Aug 2008 13:26:17 -0000

One thing I found very surprising is that in India, everyone keeps their cell phones on during meetings. Not just one-on-one meetings, but full boardroom meetings. Not only do they let them ring, but they answer them too…and have conversations without leaving the room.

    Thu, 07 Aug 2008 23:09:15 -0000

Although job hopping is a red flag, it isn’t a deal breaker. In these situations I carefully investigate the reason for the job hopping with the candidate by asking questions and checking at least 4-5 references in depth.

Engineering also provides you with job mobility down the road. It leaves the door open to change. As an engineer you can easily move into marketing or business…but not the other way around. More than half my engineering class works in finance, product design, marketing, or as entrepreneurs. Several went on to law and medical school.

  16. From the trivia question You are the International Sales Manager of XYZ Corp. You have almost landed the biggest sale your company has ever made. However, your contact in the foreign nation is pressing you for a kickback - a traditional way of doing business in that country. What do you do?

    Wed, 09 Jul 2008 19:51:58 -0000

I attended a conference this spring and the speaker suggested you should have your representative in the country you’re doing business with (if you have one) take care of all the “bribes”. You cannot know that the bribes are taking place. As a citizen of another country where bribes are illegal (ie Canada) you can be prosecuted by the that government for giving bribes in another country.

    Sort of like don’t ask, don’t tell…
