You don’t need to write an entrance exam to get into Canadian universities. Waterloo, the top math/engineering university, requires that you participate in the Descartes, a math competition. However, this only accounts for 30% of the entrance criteria. The rest is your grades and extra-curricular activities.
I would suggest that this is a more holistic approach, but not realistic at the scale of applicants John suggests try to get into IIT.
If we’re already talking about Waterloo, the contest is actually now named after Euclid… and they have a bunch of newer Waterloo contests for grades 9-11, and while they don’t account for a lot, if you write them you’ll be able to get your name out there and practice for the Euclid one in grade 12 which actually helps you get into Waterloo.
From my experience, the Euclid helps most in decisions regarding scholarships and acceptance into the advanced math option. Regular admissions are based mostly on grades and extra activities.
Also, while you are not required to pass an entrance exam, there is an English proficiency exam you have to pass by second year to stay enrolled, which is something to keep in mind.
Those IIT numbers do sounds insane though, I had no idea it could be so tough to get in… kind of makes me appreciate the fact that I was accepted really early with no entrance exam or anything, not even an SAT or something like that. Canada is nice that way.
I’m zwitten. I’ve appeared for IIT JEE 2008. I’ve prepared for 2 years for it like 400000 IIT aspirants. But unfortunately I couldn’t crack the exam. This is one of the most difficult entrance exams. As the quality of education provided at IITs is the best they are at no. 2 in engineering stream through the world. No. 1 is MIT in USA. 6 new IITs are started this year. So, there are now 13 IITs all over India. Around 8000 students cleared IIT JEE 2008.
I am a tea addict! I think I drink, on average, 6 cups a day. More on the weekends. I love tea because it is more interesting than water, but doesn’t have the sugar of other drinks. What’s more, the tea world is almost as rich as the wine world. Getting to know Pu-ehr has been a fascinating experience. Have you tried it? My other favorite is Oolong (dong-ding, empress). Darjeeling can be amazing as well (especially in India). When I need something non-caffeinated, I head for peppermint, chamomile, fruit blends. Any recommended brands?
Yes, definitely. Different question types are coming soon.
Your suggestion for allowing multiple correct answers is also a good one. We’ll do that for sure.
We’ll review the bugs you came across as well. We’re working diligently to get all the kinks out.
Note that LearnHub employees cannot participate in the contest! That means the highest authority prize is easily up for grabs.
If you really need your profile destroyed (so you can create a new one), just email support@learnhub.com with the details. Note the email address you send the request from must match your verified email address associated with your LearnHub profile.
I suggest not writing your official business plan until you’ve perfected your deck. Chances are you will end up changing many parts of your business plan around while giving your pitch to investors. Updating a formal business plan every time will be time consuming. Get your idea out there, refine based on feedback, and when you get close to sealing the deal, write the business plan.
Can anyone make Crème Brûlée? Let’s see a video of that!
That was great! I suspect not too far from the truth…
I love math. It was always one of my favorite subjects because a) math is beautiful and elegant b) there is no need for memorization – you either get it or you don’t (compare this to say biology) c) it can be challenging but you feel very accomplished when you figure something out d) there is a right answer, so your teachers cannot be subjective
I think a lot of fear of math comes from your parents. My parents always encouraged me to love math, and that it was something wonderful and powerful. My mother taught me addition and subtraction when I was 4. My father taught me basic algebra when I was 6. Maybe that made it easier when I was older, since my brain already had a taste for abstract reasoning.
