  1. From the discussion Should salaries be mentioned in Job ads?

    Sat, 30 Aug 2008 20:43:14 -0000

First of all, I don’t consider salary as the most important thing in a job. However, it is important but I would put passion for the job in the first position. Having said that, I think for both parties it would be more efficient if they would know in advance what they can expect. Don’t you think that it would be a pity if both parties (interviewer and job candidate) would be the perfect match but they just can’t agree on the salary? And they realise this after having met three times maybe. If the company would really not want to pay what the candidate expects than they both just wasted their time. Even though, every interview is an experience that can teach you important lessons, no doubt about that. It’s just that in the end the result is not that what it could have been.

  2. From the discussion Should Bollywood Stars start podcasting?

    Sat, 30 Aug 2008 20:27:14 -0000

VIP Podcasts, that would be great. I can imagine that some people like reading blogs but maybe even more people might be interested in listening to them what they have to share with their audience… e.g. their experiences being an actor/actress, their experiences with their fans, what they think about various Bollywood news/gossip etc. I wonder if there is any celebrity out there (somewhere, doesn’t have to be just Bollywood) who already does this? Getting to know a celebrity from a different perspective would be an interesting thing. I think the audience would be huge….

  3. From the lesson 30 Tips on Disability Etiquette

    Thu, 28 Aug 2008 21:08:09 -0000

Dear Chris, thanks also for this experience, I’m sure I can use it in my teaching and podcasting. I’m happy to have you aboard of my community and I look forward to many more discussions.

It’s my dream …. but I wished that schools would realise a bit more the importance of etiquette (social and professional etiquette) and would make it a compulsory subject in their courses.

  4. From the lesson 30 Tips on Disability Etiquette

    Thu, 28 Aug 2008 20:58:35 -0000

Thanks Chris for your experience, it adds so much more to my lessons and helps all of us to learn from it.

Well, regarding your experience. I would say:

    • if you invite people to an interview I would make sure that they know that you are hiring person (besides being the President), so that they can’t afford to behave in an inappropriate way.
    • I would not tell them anything regarding your disability. Decide on their initial reaction how much time you really want to spend for an interview with them. (I wonder whether all job candidates behaved in a similar way or whether there are some who were okay…...) I don’t know what kind of jobs these people were applying for, but let’s say they would have to meet or deal with other people who are in a similar position—> could you as a President of a company really afford their inappropriate behaviour towards them?
    • Another suggestion could be to take your list of short-listed candidates and ask them some questions on the phone prior to the face-to-face interview how they would generally deal with disabled people. That might allow you to narrow down your list of candidates again. This would allow you to deal just with those that are worth being invited.

Let me know what you think …. Thanks.

  6. From the lesson Interactions speak louder than words

    Thu, 28 Aug 2008 20:18:49 -0000

    Dear Chris,

Thank you very much for your story and the fact that you have chosen to share it in my community. I wished I would get such kind of comments and interesting experiences on a daily basis. As a former Business Lecturer I always experienced that students showed less interest in theories but were so much more attentive when it came to personal experiences that a lecturer shared with them…...

Well, regarding the toast of “cin cin”, you might be surprised to hear a similar experience I made 13 years ago when I attended a Japanese course. Our group was celebrating a participant’s birthday and we all happily toasted saying “cin cin”, how the Italians would write it …. Well, the facial expression of our Japanese teacher showed not really the same enthusiasm ….... So, that’s how I got to know about the same “real” meaning of this word.

I would suggest to your son to write a book about these experiences. It would be soooooo interesting. Well, I can assure you that I would be the first person to buy it! Well, it could also be a blog …. I would love reading it. Would be great if you could convince him to join my community, I’m sure it would be a great enriching experience for all of us.

Thanks again for your comment. I highly appreciate it.

I found the motivators you mentioned particularly interesting. I wonder how many MBA programs worldwide offer international business etiquette (international protocol) as a subject…..

  10. From the discussion What makes a "WoW" website?

    Thu, 21 Aug 2008 20:59:58 -0000

Is anyone aware of a website which would allow you to create your own website (with your own domain name, not subdomains!) with various features such as blogs, uploading of files, podcasts, videos, picture galleries, discussion forums, shopping carts, etc. with unlimited storage and that for FREE??? That would be really wow!!!

I would say it is a mixture of user-friendly design, up-dated material on a daily basis, quality content and lots of interaction with visitors of that website.

  12. From the discussion one billion one gold

    Wed, 20 Aug 2008 19:41:58 -0000

Well, first of all, I think this discussion topic would perfectly fit into the “Olympics” community from LeChuck …. but I would still like to answer it in this discussion forum.

I can only think of the following reasons: - India is a hot country, the conditions might make it difficult for people to exercise in such kind of climate (for most sports). - The focus might lie more on education (IT, medicine, etc.) rather than on sports. I think people’s perception regarding sports might have to change a bit. To me it seems as if the image of sports in general is not the best and considered particularly prestigious. Even though India is very good in cricket. - It reminds me of some Bollywood movies in which I also got the impression that sports (Apne in terms of boxing, Iqbal – The Rampur Express in terms of cricket and Chak de India in terms of female hockey) is not taken particularly seriously by (some) Indian people themselves. - For certain kind of sports the infrastructure might not be given. - A lack of financial resources or sponsors might make it more difficult to get a chance to make it in sports. - As far as I know, sports (physical education) is not a compulsory subject at school in India. So, if you want to become good and famous in sports it would be a good idea to start it in your early years.

Thanks for this information Malgosia. I always appreciate it getting comments which show other countries’ customs, especially when they are based on personal experiences. The important thing is always to be aware what is appropriate in that particular country.
