  2. From the discussion Is it necessary to have an embellished and proper CV or simple one can work?

    Fri, 11 Jul 2008 23:03:40 -0000

First of all, I must say that I love creative people who look for new ways to differentiate themselves. I consider myself as one of them, to be honest. In terms of CV I would say if someone tries to create a more outstanding CV (no matter how it is created) I would always invite the person to the interview, even if one of the desirable requirements might not be met by that person (the essential requirements obviously would have to be met). At the interview itself the candidate would have to PROOF what he can really bring to the table and then it depends. If he/she is able to convince me that s/he can do the job better than anyone else I wouldn’t exclude this candidate from my shortlisted candidates. Well Taniya, the content might be the same, but it shows that the candidate has the skill to approach ordinary things in a different, more original, creative way …. I must say that obviously for some jobs creativity is more important (e.g. marketing) than in other jobs (e.g. accountancy). Also that is an important point to be taken into consideration when applying for jobs. But even an accountant once got a job because he could proof his “ATTENTION TO DETAIL” – which is important in this kind of job – by attaching to his CV a picture of his wardrobe which showed how he neatly arranged his 40 ties. This helped him to land the job!!!!!!!

Let’s remember: It is good to fit in (as a person), but it’s better to stand out (if competition gets tough, you often need to be creative in order to be a step ahead)! Well, in the future we might have to apply via video only (maybe). That would mean we have to be even more creative in how we are going to differentiate ourselves in that case…...

great answer, i must say…..... but you know this question struck me as i am myself searching for a job…and i am in a fix whether to give a simple resume or to make it more exciting…..but i think i depends upon the kind of employer as you say, also the job taken into account….but still, the question remains in my mind that if the qualifications are the same …how would presenting a piece of paper which you get from a near cyberspace, which is not even your own creation and it is just a format that people follow….does that really matter??? i would like it simple and my own way rather than being a follower of anyone else’s lay out….

    Hi Meri!

I experienced exactly the same since some days to be honest and thought it just happened to me! My lessons also don’t show up on my community website and furthermore it shows my text twice (in the frame and outside the frame). I was thinking of presenting them as PowerPoint files but that is quite time consuming…... I also contacted the support@Learnhub.com as well as Adam but unfortunately I’m also still waiting. I’m sure the problem will be sorted out soon.

  8. From the discussion Share your suggestions

    Thu, 10 Jul 2008 23:09:27 -0000

First of all, great job so far Learnhubbers!

    Now my suggestions:

    • Idea 1: What about creating a section on each community’s site with some people’s opinions as testimonials. (For example, why they joined, how they could benefit from being a member so far, what they particularly enjoyed etc.). This might attract further prospective students/teachers.
    • Idea 2: Instead of having a list of members to scroll down, presenting the list of members on a world map. Similar to the concept of www.frappr.com, presented by Nellie Muller (where are you from?). I have 51 members so far in my MannersAndCareer community and wrote down manually their name, their location etc. But it would be great if – as soon as a new member joins the community – it would show on the world map which everyone could see (or only the community leader).
    • Idea 3: I wished there would be a bit more details regarding the allocation of points in the authority list. How many points do you get for each section/subsection? I invited new users but it doesn’t show up, the same with the tests I created. It seems as if I wouldn’t have created any…..
    • Idea 4: Is it possible for a community leader to see who rated various lessons, courses etc.
    • Idea 5: If I sign in on Learnhub’s website I would not like to be remembered just for 2 weeks but for at least one year :-). Just a small thing to type, however ….
    • Idea 6: What about uploading also audio podcasts?
    • Idea 7: I have power point presentations but also presentations in flash format. Would it be possible to upload also them?
    • Idea 8: Having the option to rate (thumbs up, thumbs down) is good I would say, but what about giving the person who thinks he/she really learnt something interesting from a lesson/course etc. the possibility to DONATE something to the community leader. I’m aware that there is the marketplace in which you can offer material, courses etc. for free or charging a fee. But maybe some people might be prepared to donate (even just small amounts of money) if they really think that something was particularly helpful. Therefore, could a “donate button” be taken into consideration as well?

I look forward to seeing some ideas implemented, no matter who submitted them…..

    I’ve seen 62 Bollywood movies so far, but not Swades. The ones that I’ve seen are: Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) Veer Zara (2004)  Rang De Basanti (2005)  Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001)  Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)  Hum Tum (2004)  Munnabhai MBBS (2004)  Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006)  Bunty Aur Babli (2005)  Salaam Namaste (2005)  Baghban (2003)  Devdas (2002)  Mohabbatein (2000)  Dil To Pagal Hai (1997)  Waqt – The Race Against Time (2005)  Paheli (2005)  Mother India (1957)  Iqbal – The Rampur Express (2005)  Chalte, Chalte (2003)  Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (2001)  Cheeni Kum (2007)  Dhoom 2 (2006)  Life in a Metro (2007)  Namastey London (2007)  Eklavya – The Royal Guard (2007)  The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002)  Salaam-E-Ishq (2007)  Dhadkan (2000)  Border (1997)  Masti (2004)  Ta Ra Rum Pum (2007)  Chori Chori Chupke Chupke (2001)  Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya (1989)  Baabul (2007)  Apne (2007)  The Rising (2005)  Marigold (2007)  Maine Pyar Kiya (1989)  Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994)  Main Hoon Na (2004)  Kal Ho Na Ho (2003)  Mistress of Spices (2005)  Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (2007)  Ek ajnabee (2005)  One Dollar Curry (2004)  Kyun Ho Gaya (2004)  Black (2005)  Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (KANK) (2006)  I See you (2007)  Aetbaar (2004)  Jaan-E-Mann (2006)  Dil Jo Bhi Kahey (2005)  Fanaa (2006)  Nishabd (2007)  Malamaal Weekly (2006)  Bhagam Bhag (2006)  Taxi 9-2-11 (2006)  Phir Hera Pheri (2006)  Provoked (2006)  Chak de! India (2007)  The Namesake (2006)  Humko Deewana Kar Gaye (2006) Taare Zameen Par (2007)

Would you still be interested in joining my “Danke Bollywood”community which I created 2 days ago? Would be great :-) Bollywood movies: predictable? Maybe… but I wouldn’t say more structured.

  10. From the presentation 104 Questions to ask the Recruiter

    Thu, 10 Jul 2008 21:41:40 -0000

Thanks George, for your feedback. Since each interview situation is different and a candidate is not going to ask all 104 questions to the recruiter but only some of them I would say everyone should note down those that he/she thinks are appropriate. Obviously a job candidate would be quicker in doing so, having the questions a bit more structured, I agree with you George. I will consider it in the future. By the way, what about joining my community. I’m sure we would have a lot to discuss, share and learn from each other…..

Just a short note to inform students that not all universities require a GMAT in order to do an MBA. The University of Leicester in the UK for example. This doesnt’t mean that it is not a good university, by the way. I am sure there are more out there who also don’t have it as one of their requirements.

    Wed, 09 Jul 2008 09:43:17 -0000

I don’t know whether I just didn’t see it but can someone explain a bit in more detail how the allocation of authority marks is managed? I created tests but in my community MannersAndCareer it doesn’t show up as if this would be the case. I also invited new users (outside of Learnhub) to join my community, also this results in zero. Does it only count if the person subscribes?

Furthermore, I have problems of seeing some of my most recent Lessons (created as pages) on my community website, I see them only on my profile page. Therefore, I think that my members wouldn’t even notice them. Can I do something about it? I noticed if I would create it as a PowerPoint Presentation it would show up.

    Thanks for some help.

I don’t know what the original article said but my husband told me about Learnhub and I’m so grateful for it. It’s really a great website, I spend a lot of time at it, creating tests, writing and publishing lessons, debating, discussing etc. If one day I don’t look at it then I feel as if I would have already missed so much. I already got addicted to it :-) I used to check my emails regularly, now I feel the urge to check what is going on on Learnhub and my community “MannersAndCareer”.

Well, after seeing Michelle creating this community I was thinking of creating one with “Bollywood”. I just don’t want to get distracted too much from my “MannersAndCareer” community …. so I think sooner or later I will start it, hoping that someone else will not be quicker …. To be honest, I stopped watching Hollywood movies actively since some years now because I think that in the American movies you just see either VIOLENCE, sex or a modest level of humour. Instead we should learn how to make the world a BETTER PLACE by being more humans…..

When I started watching Bollywood movies I realised that I fancy this kind of movies much more because, apart from the fact that you see very very LITTLE VIOLENCE, no sex, and often more humour, it teaches you lessons for life, which I can’t say from Hollywood movies. I would say when it comes to action movies the Americans are good (I remember Firewall with Harrison Ford, and National Treasure 1 with Nicolas Cage), but when it comes to emotional movies from which you can ALWAYS learn something, then nothing can beat Bollywood movies. I can’t think of any Hollywood movie that would have taught me important lessons for life or would have touched me in a particular way (not even Titanic). Should you have never watched any Bollywood movies until now, you definitely should do it. Make sure you have some tissues ready …. you might need them. Well, in contrast to the Top 10 Hollywood movie list, MY TOP 10 BOLLYWOOD MOVIE LIST, if it is allowed. Maybe after watching Bollywood movies you start seeing Hollywood movies with different eyes.

In no particular order, but they are all worth watching and this not just once, but over and over again.

    • Baghban
    • Veer Zara
    • Munnabhai MBBS
    • Mohabbatein
    • Waqt
    • Lage Raho Munnabhai
    • Namastey London
    • Taxi 9-2-11
    • Apne
    • Taare Zamen Par

Watch one of these movies and let me know what you think of it. I look forward ….

  17. From the discussion Do you think good-looking people have better career chances?

    Wed, 02 Jul 2008 19:24:39 -0000

An interesting point of view, Taniya. Well, what I wanted to say is that I think that good-looking people might have it easier at the beginning, but in the long run they will have to proof that the only strength they have is not just their appearance but also their competence. Any candidate who has both can consider him/herself lucky …... In terms of professional candidate I would like to add that it also depends on what kind of job we are talking about. Being good-looking in certain jobs is a requirement (think of a flight attendant – even though I’ve noticed that reality doesn’t always reflect that) while in other jobs it doesn’t matter at all. If you are good-looking and your job involves a lot of contact with clients, I would say it could also be a company’s strategy to keep people appearances’ in mind when selecting them. Often it’s all about image, as sad as it sounds…. And let’s not forget, since here we are in the “MANNERSandCareer” community … good manners can open doors that even the best education (or the nicest face) cannot! So let’s not just be good-looking but also well-mannered :-)

    Wed, 02 Jul 2008 18:52:56 -0000

    Dear Lechuck, dear Learnhub Team,

I find it a great idea to make such kind of contests. Maybe Learnhub could think of something like this also in other areas where members can vote e.g. “The Best Test of the Month/Year”, “The Best Lesson of the Month/Year”, The Best Content of the Month/Year” etc. Making it a bit competitive among members is always motivating and let’s not forget that in the end we can all learn interesting things.

On this occasion “Well done” to Koustabhdolui, Toubibpat, Serjo, Laurellion, Andrew and Sandhita! But watch out for the ambitious POSHMONKEY in the future :-) ... I just have to get started with Trivia since I was focusing on other things in my community. Just kidding … well maybe not ….

A proud and enthusiastic member of Learnhub,

    Fri, 27 Jun 2008 12:42:30 -0000

I would say greeting all four of them would definitely be politer. In the West you don’t need to wait until she offers her hand, just greet her the same way as you greet men. Well, very often rules and manners are the same but often there are very big differences, just thinking of certain gestures, which in the West might be ok but in another country completely rude. So be careful. For example, kissing someone on the street in Europe doesn’t cause any problems, but in India as far as I know would not be perceived the same way … but also here I heard that things are changing….
