  2. From the trivia question Given (a/b) <0 Column A: (a^2)/b Column B: ab

    Fri, 28 Aug 2009 03:08:47 -0000

    Given a/b < 0.

So a and b are of opposite signs.

    Hence ab < 0.

But in order to decide whether \frac{a^2}{b} is positive or negative we need to know whether b is positive or negative which is not possible with the given information.

Hence, relationship between A and B cannot be determined

In addition to the reputation of the institute you must also consider the faculty available at a particular centre. I heard that Jomboree, Chopras and CL are doing good in Delhi

  6. From the trivia question

AB + CD = AAA, where AB and CD are two-digit numbers and AAA is a three digit number; A, B, C, and D are distinct positive integers. In the addition problem above, what is the value of C?

    Fri, 28 Aug 2009 02:11:58 -0000

Hi, gaurav has given a perfect explanation.

Since A, B, C and D are distinct digits, if we consider AAA to be 222 or 333, there will be no possible values for B, C and D that satisfy the given condition.

For example if we take A = 2, the equation becomes

    2B + CD = 222

The maximum value that C take is 9. How can 2+C+some carry give us 22

    So this is not possible

  7. From the trivia question The speed of a railway engine is 42 Km per hour when no compartment is attached, and the reduction in speed is directly proportional to the square root of the number of compartments attached. If the speed of the train carried by this engine is 24 Km per hour when 9 compartments are attached, the maximum number of compartments that can be carried by the engine is:

    Fri, 28 Aug 2009 02:08:28 -0000

    Hi,

If 9 wagons are attached the speed is reduced by 18 km/hr.

Given that reduction is proportional to square root of number of wagons, which is 3 in the above case.

So, if the speed is to become 0 (train comes to rest), i.e. we need number of 42 km/hr for which the square root of number of wagons must be 7.

Hence, if 49 wagons are attached the train comes to rest.

Thus, a maximum of 48 wagons can be attached so that the train moves

  13. From the trivia question GMAT- Quantitative Section Q#101: My summer job earned me $1500, which I'm planning to spend equally over the next 10 months. After the 4th month, I spent $640. By how much was was I over/under my plan?

    Fri, 28 Aug 2009 01:49:41 -0000

    Hi,

It is given that he planned to spend $1500 equally over 10 months. So he has to spend $150 per month. Hence, in 4 months he is expected to spend $600.

But it is given that he has spent $640 instead of $600. Hence, he has spent $40 more than what he planned.

  16. From the trivia question GMAT- Quantitative Section Q#43: P is the perimeter of an equilateral triangle. What's the area of the triangle in terms of P?

    Fri, 28 Aug 2009 01:43:39 -0000

Let ‘a’ be the side of the equilateral triangle.

    Given 3a = P

    Hence a = P/3

    Now, are of equilateral triangle = \frac{\sqrt{3}}{4} \times a^2

    = \frac{\sqrt{3}}{4} \times \frac{P^2}{9} = \frac{P \times \sqrt{3}}{36}
