    Hi,

Instead of simply trying to remember the words from a list, try to learn vocabulary from general reading. This is definitely time consuming but is the best way to learn vocab. Whenever you learn a new word, try to get into its usage as well. There are good books (Norman Lewis) out there which teaches vocab from contextual point of view.

Hi, though most of the US univs require you to take SAT, there are some universities which require only TOEFL score. So, the best way is to go through the websites of the universities that you intend to join and find out the admission requirements

The minimum distance between the two will be attained after they travel 5 km each. In this case the distance between them will be sqrt(50).

Assume that the distance between them will be minimum after each of them travels x km. Now we have a right angle triangle with the lengths of the perpendicular sides as x and 10 – x. So the closest distance between them is the hypotenuse and the length of this hypotenuse will be minimum at x = 5 (You can take the help of derivatives or quadratic equations basics to conclude that hypotenuse will be minimum at x = 5)

Since you have already joined our CAT Prep Community please start with the lessons and tests in the community. Also ensure that you are going through this community regularly. Let us look at a bigger picture now.

Are you considering to join any coaching institutes? Most of the students who make it into the top B-Schools are trained by corporate institutes like TIME, CL IMS etc, I suggest you to join one of them if it is feasible. If not at least try to get into correspondence coaching (all these institutes offer that) so that you will have lot of material to practice. So in order to finish this material you will obviously get into some strict plan.

Even if you join these coaching institutes you will still have personal doubts regarding Test Preparation which these institutes are never bothered. It is here you can get in touch with our Learnhub’s Expert Team

Besides CAT, you must also consider other exams like XAT, IIFT, FMS and SNAP to get into the next level top B-Schools. Just keep watching our CAT Prep Community as I am going to come up with an articles on all these exams very shortly.

Please go through the book How to prepare for CAT Quant by Arun Sharma. This book is really good and matches the CAT standard pretty well. The same author has written a book named How to prepare for CAT DI. I am sure these books will definitely help you.Besides these books you must have material of at least one of the top CAT training institutes like TIME, CL and IMS.

For more practice in Verbal Ability join our GMAT Prep, SAT Prep and GRE Prep communities and go through the lessons and tests in these communities on a regular basis.

    Fri, 21 Aug 2009 21:16:41 -0000

    Given number is 1001001001 = 11×91000091 = 11×91 x 1000001 = 11×91 x 101×9901

Thus, the largest divisor of 1001001001 less than 10000 is 9901.

9901 divided by 7, the remainder is 3

    Hi,

Public Banks wage bill is (11136 – 461) i.e 10675 more than that of Foreign banks.

    So the required percentage = (10675/461) x 100 = 2315.61%

    Hi,

One good thing is that you are eligible for CAT (50% in graduation required) and since not all the top B-Schools give priority to your graduation percentage, you have definite chances to get into the top B-Schools provided you score high in CAT and post-CAT activities as well. So, stop worrying about the percentage factor and give your best shot in CAT.

The given series is an arithmetic series starting with 20 and with 4 as the common difference. We need to find the number of terms in this series such that their sum is more than 1000

The sum to n terms in a A.P is given by n/2(2a+ (n-1)d) where, a is the first term and d is the common difference.

    So, we have n/2(40+(n-1)4) > 1000

    n(2n + 18) > 1000

    For n = 18, the value of n(2n+18) = 18(54) = 9(108) < 1000

    For n = 19, the value of n(2n+18) = 19(56) > 1000

So after 19 years, his total savings will be more than 1000

(In fact, you can use options to conclude the answer quickly)

    Fri, 21 Aug 2009 20:40:53 -0000

    Hi,

Though both CAT and GMAT are online exams, they differ not only in the syllabus of the exam but also the mode. CAT is Computer Based Test and GMAT is Computer Adaptive Test. Also, the syllabus for CAT is much more than that of GMAT and one who prepares exclusively for GMAT will not be able to score high in CAT. Definitely CAT is much tougher than that of GMAT and hence one needs to put an extra amount of preparation to crack CAT

    1. Given that he sells the mixture at cost price and gains 11.11% i.e. 1/9.

To gain 1/9, the selling price must be 10/9 the cost price.

Since this is not allowed, he must give 9/10 of the quantity. So the remaining 1/10 must be water.

Thus the ratio of milk and water is 9 : 1.

Thus for every 9 litres of milk he must add 1 liter of water.

Hence, for every liter of milk he must add 1/9 liter of water..this is same as 11.11%

So the simple logic is …since he is getting 11.11% this gain is purely because of water and hence this itself will be the answer.

    2. Given that the number of 25 paise coins are 133.33% i.e 4/3 more than that of 1 rupee coins.

Let the number of 1 rupee coins be 3x

Then the number of 25 paise coins will be 7x

The number of 50 paise coins will be 105 – (10x)

    Amount contributed by 1 rupee coins = 3x rupees = 300x paise

    Amount contributed by 25 paise coins = 25(7x) = 175 paise

    Amount contributed by 50 paise coins = [105-(10x)]50 = 5250 – 500x paise

Total amount is given as 50.5 rupees = 5050 paise

    Thus, we have 5250 – 25x = 5050

    Hence, x = 8.

    Thus, the total number of 1 rupee coins = 3x = 24

Hi, we have a result that will help us to answer this.

If P is a prime number, then for any natural number n (not divisible by P) the number n(P-1) – 1 is exactly divisible by P.

So the number 1516 – 1 is divisible by 17, since 17 is prime

  17. From the trivia question A license plate in the country Kerrania consists of four digits followed by two letters. The letters A, B, and C are used only by government vehicles while the letters D through Z are used by non-government vehicles. Kerrania’s intelligence agency has recently captured a message from the country Gonzalia indicating that an electronic transmitter has been installed in a Kerrania government vehicle with a license plate starting with 79. If it takes the police 10 minutes to inspect each vehicle, what is the probability that the police will find the transmitter within three hours?

    Fri, 21 Aug 2009 20:11:49 -0000

Given that the vehicle is a government vehicle and it starts with 79.

So the rest two digits could be any digits from the 10 digits.

Also, since it is a government vehicle, the two alphabets must be from A,B and C.

Hence the total number of vehicles to be checked will be 10×10 x 3×3 = 900

Since each vehicle takes 10 minutes to be checked, total time taken to check 900 vehicles = 900×10 minutes = 150 hours.

So, the probability that the vehicle can be found in 3 hrs = 3/150 = 1/50

  18. From the trivia question

The sum of four consecutive two-digit odd numbers, when divided by 10, becomes a perfect square. Which of the following can possibly be one of these four numbers?

    Fri, 21 Aug 2009 18:22:09 -0000

    Let the four consecutive odd number be x-2 , x , x+2 and x+4

    Their sum is 4x+4 = 4(x+1)

Given that this sum is divisible by 10 and the result is a perfect square.

Now if x+1 = 10, the result when 4(x+1) is divided by 10 will be 4, which is a perfect square.

But if x+ 1= 10, then the first number and the second number will not be two digit numbers.

So, let us consider the next possible value of x+1.

Now if x+1 = 10k, then the sum when divided by 10 will be 4k and for this to be a perfect square, k must be a perfect square.

    Let us take k = 4.

    i.e. x+1 = 40.

Now the sum will be 4(40) and this divided by 10, we get the result as 16, which is a perfect square.

    Hence x = 39.

Thus, the four numbers are 37, 39, 41 and 43
