  4. From the trivia question How many linear equations do you need to solve a question with 6 variables with no resrictions?

    Sat, 11 Oct 2008 17:09:45 -0000

Dear oLahav,we will need 6 equations not in all the cases. By putting some conditions on the variables the number of equations required to solve them will come down to less than 6 . There is a topic called “Special Equations” which deals with this stuff.

Without any hesitation I will choose the first choice.

    Let’s look at the question…

Having immigrated to Canada at age 14, his first film reflects Ivan Borovsky’s childhood in Russia.

In the above sentence, there is no clarity about to whom does ‘his’ refer to.

Now if you consider the first choice this is the sentence that we have.

Having immigrated to Canada at age 14, Ivan Borovsky reflects his childhood in Russia in his first film.

I think this sentence is well structured(as Chandra_avinash pointed out)

If you plug in any other option, the same problem pops up which we discussed earlier with the original sentence

    Tue, 07 Oct 2008 08:48:45 -0000

Dear Sanchit, the problem here is that we need to add certain gallons from vessel A to 90 gallons of vessel B such that the resultant mixture contains 40% milk. So we found the ratio of the number of gallons that must be mixed from vessel A and vessel B so that the resultant mixture is 40% milk and that ratio turned out to be 49:36, which means for every 36 gallons from B we need to add 49 gallons from A.

Hey ravi, cool man…....let us wait and see…anyway chandra has cleared your doubts I guess.

I think they are still making the necessary arrangements for the competition. But again you may come back saying that “if they are not clear why should they start this”?

Look… this is started for the benefit of us (learnhubbers). I mean if they just announce the competition 2-3 days before it starts off then most of the leranhubbers may not be able to participate. Again you may revert back saying that why don’t they start off a bit late. But again since IIT Kanpur is also associated with this event probably they should have had some deadline or so.

Anyway, I personally feel that we all should appreciate these people for conducting such a big event. And I am sure they will be able to conduct this event quite genuinely.

As a fellow learnhubber, I can understand your feelings. I am sure that every learnhubber have the right to question the fairness involved in the competition and doubly sure that the people conducting this event will keep this clear and genuine.

  15. From the lesson Time, Speed & Distance # 2

    Mon, 29 Sep 2008 05:44:47 -0000

I guess that these are not shortcuts, instead we are trying to use the concepts explained by you in the lesson 1. (Relationship between SPEED, TIME and DISTANCE). What I personally think is that this is how our teachers should have taught us Time and Distance. Unfortunately, this is not the case with most of the schools and we ended up framing equations, applying formulae and finally landed in a situation where applying a concept is somehow treated as a shortcut. So I think, instead of teaching by using some formulae (which most of the people does) we should straight away start teaching by applying the concepts (so that a student can imagine the same problem in real life situation) and this is how we can make a huge difference in the process of learning with the aid of LEARNHUB.

Dear Gaurav, I am sure you are a person of great calibre and definitely a person like you can make this huge difference in the art of teaching. I hope you will understand me.

    Regards

  16. From the lesson Work based problems

    Sun, 28 Sep 2008 06:27:58 -0000

Similarly let us look at example 3 as well…

IF 30 men working 7 hours per day can do a work in 18 days in how many days will 21 men working 8 hours a day do the same work?

Given that 30 men take 18×7 hours.

So 21 men will take 30/21×18x7 hrs = 180 hrs.

Since per day they work for 8 hrs, in order to contribute 180 hrs they will take 180/8 = 22.5 days.

  17. From the lesson Work based problems

    Sun, 28 Sep 2008 06:25:18 -0000

Let’s look at example 1 in a way which is close to practical life..

A group of men completes a work in 10 days, but five of them are absent and so the rest do the work in 12 days. Find the original number of Men.

Since 5 men did not work for 10 days, remaining men worked for 2 days extra. Which means remaining men in 2 days they are contributing 50 man days. Hence remaining men must be 25. Original men must me 30.

  18. From the lesson Time, Speed & Distance # 2

    Sun, 28 Sep 2008 06:12:49 -0000

    Let’s look at question 3….

Mr. X traveled 120 km by vehicle A, 450 km by vehicle B and 60 km by vehicle c. The whole journey took 13 hours and 30 minutes. Speed of vehicle B is 3 times the speed of vehicle C and 1.5 times the speed of vehicle A. Find the speed of vehicle B.

Given that Speeds ratio of A B and C is 2:3:1

Given that Distance ratio of A B and C is 4:15:2

    Hence the Time ratio of A B and C will be \frac {4}{2} : \frac {15}{3} : \frac {2}{1} = 2:5:2

Since it is given that total time taken is 13.5 hrs i.e 27/2 hrs, time taken by B is 5/9×27/2 = 15/2 hrs.

Hence B covered a distance of 450 km in 15/2 hours.

So Speed of B is 60km/hr

  19. From the lesson Time, Speed & Distance # 2

    Sun, 28 Sep 2008 06:01:43 -0000

I just want to discuss some of these questions…... The basic point that a CAT aspirant has to keep in mind is that “No formula Approach” Speed = \frac {Distance}{Time} is the only formula that we are going to use and of course the relationship betwenn Speed, Distance and Time.

Coming to the second question discussed above…....

Walking at \frac {3}{4}th of the speed , Mr.X is 2 hrs late. Find his usual time.

Since distance is constant here and we know that SPEED and TIME are inversely proportional let’s make use of that statement.

Since speed has become 3/4, the time becomes 4/3 i.e he will be late by 1/3 of this normal time which is given as 2 hours.

So 1/3 of his normal time is 2 hrs . Hence his normal time is 6 hrs.

    Dear Gaurav, look into this…..

If TIME is constant , SPEED and DISTANCE are directly proportional to each other If SPEED is constant, TIME and DISTANCE are directly proportional to each other.

But, in your lesson you mentioned quite opposite to this. Kindly look into this and make the necessary changes in the lesson.
