Definitely this is a tough call and one should not worry too much about the IIT tag but instead consider the faculty and the infrastructure provided by these colleges

    Hi,

Most of the students started preparing for CAT from their second year of engineering and I think this will give ample time for a solid preparation. By the way, are you considering joining any coaching classes?

Definitely TES…But you need to take more tests and analyze your performance in the next 3 months. In fact you will learn a good number of concepts besides improving your test taking skills.

  8. From the unknown Mr. X has to build a wall 1000 meters long in 50 days. He employs 56 men but at the end of 27 days finds that only 448 meters are built. How many more men must be employed so that the work may be finished in time?

    Mon, 17 Aug 2009 15:28:04 -0000

Given that 448 meters required 56×27 mandays.

Hence the remaining 552 meters requires

    \frac{552}{448} \times 56 \times 27 = 69 \times 27 \text{ mandays}

We need these mandays in the remaining 23 days.

    Hence the number of men required = \frac{69 \times 27}{23} = 81

As we have 56 men, we need another 25 men extra

    Hi,

You have already asked us to give the answer that you are looking for. Then what’s the point in posting this question?

    Hey…just kidding…

It is definitely possible and it all depends upon your present skills set. You can check your present test taking skills by taking a mock CAT or you can take CAT 2008 full length tests on Learnhub itself and check your performance. Based on this you can work out a study plan which will definitely escalate your chances of getting into the top B-Schools.

    Dear Sumanth,

Your academic profile is definitely good to compete in the so called race of IIMs admission. But you need to perform very well in CAT and post CAT activities. The admission is given based on your academic profile, CAT and post CAT performance. So gear up for the CAT preparation and do your best in the exam.

How many seven letter words can be constructed using 26 letters of the alphabet if each word contains 3 vowels? (repetition is allowed)

    Mon, 17 Aug 2009 15:10:44 -0000

There is a problem with the solution.

Since repetition is allowed, the three vowels can be chosen from 5 vowels and the rest 4 alphabets can be chosen from the remaining 21 consonants. Since the repetition is allowed, we have 5^3 \times 21^4 ways to chose the required alphabets.

Now the number of ways in which these can be rearranged depends upon the number of repetitions and hence the answer has to be much bigger.

  16. From the unknown

Q.10 A shopkeeper increases the price of an article by X% and then decreases it by X%. As a result the price of the article is reduced by 180 Rs. After one more such change the price is further reduced by 153 Rs. Find the original price of the article.

    Mon, 17 Aug 2009 14:46:48 -0000

If the price is increased by x% and then decreased by x% there would be a decrease in the price and let the decrease by y%.

Let P be the original price of the article.

    Given that y%(P) = 180….......(1)

Now the current price is P – 180 and this price is further reduced by y%

    Given that y%(P – 180) = 153…...(2)

    From (1) and (2), we get y = 15

    Thus we have 15%(P) = 180

    Hence P = 1200.

  18. From the trivia question What is Kaprekar constant?

    Mon, 17 Aug 2009 13:43:09 -0000

6174 is known as Kaprekar’s constant after the Indian mathematician D. R. Kaprekar. This number is notable for the following property:

    1. Take any four-digit number with at least two digits different. (Leading zeros are allowed.)

    2. Arrange the digits in ascending and then in descending order to get two four-digit numbers, adding leading zeros if necessary.

    3. Subtract the smaller number from the bigger number.

    Go back to step 2.

The above operation, known as Kaprekar’s operation, will always reach 6174 in at most 7 steps and it stops there. Once 6174 is reached, the process will keep yielding 7641 – 1467 = 6174.

    For example, choose 3524:

    5432 – 2345 = 3087

    8730 – 0378 = 8352

    8532 – 2358 = 6174

The only four-digit numbers for which this function does not work are repdigits such as 1111, which give the answer 0 after a single iteration. All other four-digits numbers work if leading zeros are used to keep the number of digits at 4:

    2111 – 1112 = 0999

    9990 – 0999 = 8991 (rather than 999 – 999 = 0)

    9981 – 1899 = 8082

    8820 – 0288 = 8532

    8532 – 2358 = 6174

495 has the same property for three-digit numbers. For five-digit numbers and above, the function does not settle down to a single value, but instead cycles through one of several series of values.
