  1. From the lesson Icebreaker Activites To Try

    Thu, 04 Sep 2008 20:48:18 -0000

Great lesson! I’ve definitely played these games as part of leadership workshops and when getting together with a new group or team. It helps break the awkwardness and gives people the chance to get to know others on a very basic level. I’ve played Word Warp with a variation of just asking a question rather that a word, but I think having just a word would allow for more imaginative answers and more to talk about. I definitely agree that debriefing is key. Reflecting on any process helps to cement the activities and things learned in your mind.

  2. From the discussion About Salford university

    Thu, 04 Sep 2008 19:06:10 -0000

    Hi Vikalp,

Salford University looks to be like a very reputable, interactive and innovative institution. I can understand why you’d be looking into this school, as it ranks within the top three schools in the UK for research. Quality of courses and the academic standards are ranked highly at Salford, as well as independent institution audits allow them to continually strive for a higher level of teaching and quality instruction.

Physics, a subject you would most likely take as part of your MSc program is rated one of the best in the UK. Are you interested in the BEng in Aeronautical Engineering perhaps? Salford’s websites says that “the programme is accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society as a pathway leading to Chartered Engineer status”. This means that you would be able to attain job prospects after your graduation in many fields including design, manufacture, operation of aerospace vehicles, even other aerospace related industries. If you are interested in the prospects of manufacturing, you may find it interesting that you can involve yourself with avionics, environmental control. even parts manufacture such as engines.

I’m not exactly sure of salaries in this field, however I do know that these sort of careers are very lucrative. The aerospace industry will no doubt be expanding, and having a background in this will surely make you an avid and focussed candidate because of your research and studies.

I have taken the liberty to find you a consultant in Mumbai that may help you learn more about this program of study and your potential at Salford…

These are some great tips. I’m going to use them to help me learn French! I’m definitely going to do tip number 4 before I even go. Possibly even prepare some common questions and answers so I can anticipate them.

    Thu, 04 Sep 2008 16:42:43 -0000

Thank you so much for your interesting and thought-provoking response.

I really agree with what you’ve said, especially “information has no intrinsic value; it derives its value from what you get using that information.” This reminds me specifically about Marshall McLuhan’s call of “the medium is the message”. My take on this is that it isn’t so much what is said, but more so how it’s said, presented and then in turn received.

Information itself can take on many forms but the whole idea is that information resounds differently to people depending on their method of receiving such information, as well as how it connects to their values, beliefs, even past experiences. The ability to take such information and transform it into something with meaning is truly the key element here. You can have a tool, but until you understand how to make use of it, it is obsolete.

Education as you have pointed out is the same way. Students must be stimulated in order to discover and learn. That is why studies such as this and presentations on them are so interesting and intriguing. It takes the process of how information is registered and turns it upon itself. A study of a study if you will. This encourages further discussion and dissemination of ideas, which I definitely agree is a great environment to collaborate within.

It does have to do with the process of transition from one to another.. not really earth and heaven… but you’re getting really close!

Word 8: (The letter “Z” is inspiring me to be over-ambitious :P)
Zeitgeist (noun)- Originally a German word derived from Zeit meaning time and Geist meaning spirit. This word in definition means the defining spirit or mood of a specific period in history as demonstrated through the ideas and beliefs of the time. An example- The old photograph of a teenage flapper captured the zeitgeist, or essence of the Roaring Twenties.

Zelig (noun) – A person who is able to change their appearance, behaviour, or attitudes, so as to be comfortable in any situation. Fact: This term comes forth from Woody Allen’s film named the same, made in 1983. 11. From the lesson Scary Plural Forms

    Thu, 04 Sep 2008 15:50:48 -0000

    Hi Summe66,

Welcome to LearnHub. I’m glad you’re finding the resources here helpful already, that’s great to hear.

To answer your question about the plural form of tests, yes it does exist. An example of this usage would be “In the coming weeks, I will have to write 7 tests”. It would be incorrect to say something like “I must achieve high marks on all test coming up.” Adding an s to make it plural is an easy rule to remember.

    See you around the Hub!

You are right in stating there is a plural form for the noun test – e.g., “There will be a test”, “There will be tests”.

Also keep in mind there is the verb “to test”. “I will test you”, “You will be tested”. In the present tense, if someone is being tested at that very moment, you can say -“Amy is testing Becky”. If someone is being tested on an ongoing basis, you can say “Amy is her tutor. Amy tests Becky on English once a week.”

I hope this is helpful to you!

  12. From the lesson Beginner's Scarf - The Artful Garter

    Wed, 03 Sep 2008 21:13:21 -0000

    Hi Kikwa,

I’m not sure the exact length, but I would say get two skeins just in case. A normal length scarf will usually take up about a skein and a half. The new skein can be introduced easily by simply knotting the end of the first as you knit to the new ball and work that through. How long is the desired length you were thinking of? And what type of yarn were you thinking of using?

  13. From the lesson Caring for an Orchid

    Wed, 03 Sep 2008 20:52:01 -0000

    Hi Kathy!

It’s so funny how they can be the most fragile of plants and from the stories we’ve seen here, the most resilient! I don’t think there’s too many plants you can leave in the basement and have blooming flowers some months later, so orchids are really some odd and wonderful specimens!

I looked up some information on orchid fertilizer. Most sources recommend making sure phosphorus is the second number in the fertilizer formula. Phosphorus is said to help the orchids develop their roots and in turn boost the flowering process, or its metabolism so to speak. I would suggest checking out your normal fertilizer to see what number formula you’re currently using. It’s best to change fertilizers if it’s not working rather than to just use more. Often the roots can be burned by over fertilization.

Since yours, Mawstools as well as Malgosia’s orchids are already blooming, sources suggest a formula that has the number 7-11-27. The last number in the formula represents Potassium, which is meant to sustain the blooms and increase the number of flowers produced by your orchid.

Best of luck rekindling your forgotten flora friendship. :)

    Wed, 03 Sep 2008 20:27:04 -0000

    Hi Meroyal,

Looks like you’ve been working quite hard to prepare. Congratulations on all your hard work thus far. The score of 640 is pretty great, you should be proud. If this were your score on the actual test, it would put you in and around the 82nd percentile. If you are nervous about the verbal section of the GMAT, I would encourage you to check out Reading Comprehension Lesson and Reading Comprehension Lesson II. This Critical Reasoning Lesson may also help you out.

As far as scores go, you can check out this discussion on GMAT Scores to see average GMAT scores for the top 25 Business Schools.

Keep in mind as well that test scores aren’t everything. You should keep in mind that application essays, references as well as keeping your GPA up are all important.

Best of luck in November! If you have any other questions, please, feel free to post!

    Word 6:
Liminal (Adj)- Referring to the transitional or initial stage of a process. It can also mean to occupy a position at, or on both sides of a boundary or threshold. For example- The report card marks were still in a liminal state due to the teacher’s injury. Another example- We may have a liminality, the basketball game has been delayed.

    Tip #8

    Argue but don’t Ignore

It is great to have your own opinion and to back up this opinion with as many examples, perspectives, etc. that you’d like. However try not to discount the other side. It is common to pigeon-hole yourself sometimes by getting so in-depth on one side of an argument. Be sure to step back every once and a while and see what others may say on the topic. Write a “aside” paragraph if you’d like. This not only shows that you’ve done extra research into the topic, but also that you are a whole-picture thinker. You never know, this new perspective may change yours and create an even more interesting discussion within your essay.

  20. From the discussion Can technology replace textbooks?

    Wed, 03 Sep 2008 13:22:25 -0000

I think that this interaction however can take place over and through technology. I personally feel that curriculum itself can be brought forth through technology, interaction such as online tutoring, instant chat or discussion forums. So there is that connection between students and teachers, and I think that stands up as a more significant part of the learning process that textbooks would be.
