  1. From the discussion Best movie lines

    Thu, 28 Aug 2008 17:33:00 -0000

Here’s a few of my favourites:

    • “The biggest fish in the river gets that way by never being caught.” – The Witch to Edward Bloom in Big Fish
    • “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return” – Moulin Rouge
    • “In L.A., nobody touches you. We’re always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something. ” – Crash
    • “Without you, today’s emotions would be the scurf of yesterday’s. ” – Amelie
    • “Here’s looking at you, Kid” – Casablanca

    And my least favourite quote:

    • “No one puts Baby in the corner!” – Dirty Dancing (I just think it’s corny.)

  2. From the trivia question 27. Sentence Completion: Fill in the blank(s) by choosing the best word or set of words that fits within the context of the whole sentence.

Mrs. Hubfellow was so nice, sometimes she would let go of the _________ rules and let us go outside and experience learning in nature!

    Thu, 28 Aug 2008 17:17:35 -0000

It’s not so much about the content of the question, dsbhattal, but the vocabulary you use within it.

I personally would not call it foolish since the vocabulary used is quite unique and it is questions like this that help you to learn outside of one’s present knowledge.

  6. From the discussion Mini-Essay Assignment!

    Thu, 28 Aug 2008 14:08:25 -0000

Wow Tenzin, what an engaging story. You have a very good sense of flow in your writing and I can sense that you write from the heart. This is especially important because you really want the reader to feel involved in your story and understand your point of view. I like how you’ve incorporated some difficult and different vocabulary. This shows the reader that you may read extensively or that you understand a broad range of words. The sentence I love the most is “I must admit, the sacrifice that was transcendent to giving up all her dreams kept me determined to work harder every time”. Excellent writing!

A few suggestions to make your writing even stronger: Make sure you use a capital letter at the start of each sentence. Separate your sentences by using a space after the period and then starting yet another sentence with another capital. This is simple punctuation that you can easily get the hang of. “No doubt” is actually an incorrect form of “without a doubt”, so try to keep this in mind. “Loosing” should be spelled as “losing”. Check out this lesson on Common Grammar Errors to read up on more. The vocabulary words you’ve used are mostly good, just make sure that you’re spelling them correctly. One you may want to look over is”acquiescently”.

Hope these give you an opportunity to raise the skill level of your writing even higher. Great job Tenzin!

  7. From the discussion Which superpower would you choose?

    Wed, 27 Aug 2008 16:50:49 -0000

Funny story, me and a couple friends were discussing the superpowers we would love to have. One of my friends then said “how amazing would it be if you could swim in the air?!”. All of us just looked at him and paused then said “wouldn’t that be, you know, flying?”. He felt a little bit powerless for a moment!

  9. From the presentation Secrets to a Good Night's Sleep

    Tue, 26 Aug 2008 21:11:17 -0000

It is surprising how easy it is to go under or over our perfect amount of sleep. I would say for many, the problem would be not getting enough sleep. But what oversleeping does is leave you in that groggy sort of state. Trying to keep to a regulated sleep schedule for the most part will help you overcome this.

  10. From the discussion Your favourite rhetoricians?

    Tue, 26 Aug 2008 21:05:45 -0000

I know he is inspiring to many, but I would say that Martin Luther King Junior was a fantastic rhetorician and my first pick. To be able to speak with such conviction about an issue that spans not just the time of 1963 or place, Washington D.C. really speaks droves. “I have a dream” has such significance in the pathos sector of rhetoric and he does this with such sophistication. The repetition of “I have a dream” and the phrases of “Let freedom ring” strikes chords with people. An amazing speech that invokes emotion, action and a shared passion in his mission for equality.

“The colder the hands, the warmer the heart”.

Or so that say. And if that’s the case then we should have our hearts set on rethinking this myth business. It’s happening, and we’ve got to slow the consumption cycle.

  13. From the lesson Discover USA National Parks!

    Tue, 26 Aug 2008 18:46:26 -0000

I was very lucky to spend almost a week in Yosemite National Park. The giant sequoia trees are breathtaking and the rockfaces are amazing. I was able to go up on a mountain across the way from the half-dome mountain peak, which is definitely a sight to see. We were able to sit up there and see the stars. There were no light sources around, and even the moon was low on the horizon. We could see 3 planets and hundreds of constellations that looked like they were straight from the books they were so bright. Scorpio was low in the sky when we went and you could actually see the red colour of the “heart of Scorpio” called Antares.

I would definitely suggest going, if only for the stars!

    Hi Sankalp,

You may still be able to send your information in without TOEFL scores, as Adam said in this discussion it may be because the first term for many Canadian schools is just about to start. Keep trying every so often, and until them you can browse through some great schools in the School Search tab on LearnHub. Hope this helps!

  16. From the discussion Beijing 2008 the greatest ever?

    Tue, 26 Aug 2008 16:36:13 -0000

I would have to say first off that I haven’t been watching the Olympics on a regular basis, this year or the ones past, however from my little tidbit experience, I may be able to contribute something. I think nowadays there’s more and more ability to have topics such as human rights and other things upsetting about the host countries become a spotlight within the Olympics. Because the sports played are really being seen by a global audience why not bring important issues to the forefront. For this reason, I would say that impacts a different aspect of the games. Yes, there was controversy, but we’ll see that there will be controversy in future games and ones past. I believe having global attention on the human rights claims was a good thing, it is something that needs to be addressed by the global community. However in light of the Games, it may not have had the most positive affects for China’s reputation.

The games themselves were quite impressive. I wasn’t able to see the opening ceremonies, however just taking in the architecture of the buildings is quite impressive. China really did outdo themselves and provided an almost fantasy-world for competitors to come to. The events stirred great response, top athletes from all over the world shone, and I think that’s what the Olympics are about, year after year.

  17. From the discussion How can i improve my sense of humor??????

    Tue, 26 Aug 2008 16:29:11 -0000

I think in order to have sense and be funny is see the literal meanings behind things and having the ability to take them and twist them into sarcasm or make a pun out of words or phrases. Such as a phrase like “Insomnia, what a snore!”. In order to really understand the humour behind that you need to have the sense behind what insomnia is and then have the ability to turn it into a joke by association. That’s just my little piece of advice!

  18. From the trivia question 69. Sentence Correction: These questions will test your ability to find grammar and usage errors. There will either be one error or no error at all in each sentence. The error (if any) will be underlined and the corresponding lettered answer (A,B or C) will be placed beside the possible answers. If the sentence contains no error choose D.

Lise Van Gutten composed her last song and at age eighty-seven years old .

    Tue, 26 Aug 2008 14:37:37 -0000

You are correct, the incorrect answer was picked as right by mistake. It should be changed now.

Yes, “and when” is awkward in sentence structure. Although it may not seem like the best answer, “at the time when” takes a little more time to complete and is longer, but it works better in connection with the first part of this phrase.

  19. From the trivia question SAT Grammar # 86 -- Identify the error in the sentence below:
Having recently joined La Leche League, she is surprised to find that there were many disparate opinions on the proper start and end for breastfeeding. No error

    Tue, 26 Aug 2008 14:27:00 -0000

I believe that the start of the sentence of “having recently joined” puts the situation in a past tense, meaning that “is” would not be correct. “Joined” and “is” puts a conflict between tenses. The sentence would be correct using “were” if it looked like this:

She has recently joined La Leche League, and is surprised to find that there are many disparate opinions on the proper start and end for breastfeeding.

  20. From the trivia question 120. The phrase, "it was the best of times, it was the worse of times" refers to what literary device?

    Tue, 26 Aug 2008 13:55:34 -0000

Oops, the letters got switched around. Sorry for the inconvenience, I’ll check this out and change it. It should be a paradoxical phrase that makes use of repetition.
