If the Test Center is packed you can apply to the test center of some other city or else wait for the next date i.e the 4th of October.

  2. From the trivia question 137. Sentence Correction:
The Protestant Reformation was initiated by Martin Luther, a German Monk that was excommunicated for challenging the authority of the Catholic Church.

    Wed, 20 Aug 2008 14:37:28 -0000

The word “was” mirrors what was first mentioned before the introduction of the Monk. Yes, your answer is correct, however to have the best answer picked possible, it would be using “was”.

  3. From the trivia question 75. GMAT - Verbal Section: Advanced Grammar Practice
    Identify the following misuse:
The defendent had to plead guilty since it was obvious he was the one who stole the cookies from the cookie far.

    Wed, 20 Aug 2008 14:34:42 -0000

    1. Defendant is spelled incorrectly

    2. Far should be spelled as jar

If you think this is a good honest question to help with you GMAT preparation, you would use the word “fair”. As fair means something is equal, balanced or just. “Fare” refers to a payment or token, most likely used when boarding a bus, or using it as a way of transportation payment.

  4. From the trivia question 37. GMAT - Verbal Section: Sentence Correction
Rephrase or choose the following best answer:
Stephen King has recently published a horror story detailing an alien plant with rootlike tentacles spawned by a single egg some 5,000 years ago beneath the Earth's surface, extending for more than 100 acres in the soil of a large swamp.

    Wed, 20 Aug 2008 14:30:50 -0000

    hi bgupta,

the verb “extending” is referring to the single egg. Therefore it can not be past tense since it pertains to the egg itself. To clarify this distinction, I will take out the “and”. Maybe this will make the connection more clear.

  5. From the trivia question 18. GMAT - Verbal Section: Sentence Correction
Rephrase or choose the following best answer:
Based on research papers of several meteorologists scientists have painted a sketchy picture of the possible effects of global warming, which includes floods, droughts, and natural disasters.

    Wed, 20 Aug 2008 14:22:05 -0000

The verb “based on” gives a very general action to what the scientists are using the papers for. The verb “using” makes the correlation direct between the papers and what the scientists have made in their research.

As contrasted with the grizzly bear, the Panda bear lives in the Far East and is a highly endangered species.

  8. From the trivia question 57. GMAT - Verbal Section: Sentence Correction
Rephrase or choose the following best answer:
The diary lay open on Tamara's desk, I was so tempted to read it!

    Wed, 20 Aug 2008 13:56:06 -0000

You are correct. The past tense here does show that the correct answer should also be in past tense. Lay itself has been marked as correct by mistake, as “lay” signals present tense, maybe even future. Also the choice of “was laid open” means the same thing as laid open. Thanks for the clarification numerovirgo!

  9. From the trivia question 294.SAT Vocabulary: Free from blame means...

    Tue, 19 Aug 2008 23:08:20 -0000

    No worries pckcnk,

Vindicate is the most correct answer since it literally means to clear someone of blame or suspicion.

  10. From the trivia question 30. GMAT - Verbal Section: Sentence Correction
Rephrase or choose the following best answer:
Globalization and attempts to connect the boundaries of demographics and geography such as free and fair trade still has not extensively improved the conditions of poverty in most countries.

    Tue, 19 Aug 2008 23:05:35 -0000

Thanks for your input, it seems I was trying to include more information into the question than necessary. However Globalization on its own does not require of it a connection to attempts necessarily. It is true that the attempts stem from Globalization itself however the use of “and” is not incorrect.

Globalization, free and fair trade even without the “s” involved to show that they are plural still require the subject-verb agreement of “have” as the answer states.

  11. From the trivia question 23. GMAT - Verbal Section: Sentence Correction
Rephrase or choose the following best answer:
Cod fished off of the Atlantic coast of Canada was practically extinct, primarily due to overfishing in the 1990s which led to a moratorium of cod in the year 1994.

    Tue, 19 Aug 2008 22:58:50 -0000

This is a difficult question. “Due to” means caused by, ascribable to or because of or owning to. “Because of” means on account of or since. This is important when discerning the most correct answer. The definition of because meaning since relates to the negative construction that follows.

The reason this is the best answer because if the answer “due to” was chosen, it would have been repeated by “led to” later on in the sentence. Using “because of” adds more diversity to the sentence making it the most correct answer choice.

  12. From the trivia question 28. GMAT - Verbal Section: Sentence Correction
Rephrase or choose the following best answer:
Cavemen are indebted as having discovered and possibly harnessed the element of fire before the civilizations of homosapians.

    Tue, 19 Aug 2008 22:51:47 -0000

Yes you are correct. “Credited” can be used as a substitute. This is also a great way to understand the usage of such words by replacing them with ones that you know. Great job numerovirgo!

  13. From the trivia question 257. GMAT Sentence Correction:

I became crafty and made a few paper cranes, the dexterity in my fingers became numb after making more than ten.

    Tue, 19 Aug 2008 22:49:32 -0000

Dexterity: It is a noun meaning the skill in performing tasks, especially with your hands.

Example: her dexterity with wielding a paintbrush.

Therefore, this answer is correct since the dexterity of something pertains to one’s hands for the most part. It is not so much “in” but rather a characteristic of their hands.

  14. From the discussion Math or English- which is the harder part?

    Tue, 19 Aug 2008 18:59:57 -0000

I think that English can be funny as well. Plus, what can be more interesting than extending your vocabulary? You’re able to take what you learn to prepare for the English section and apply it to everyday situations. Such as conversations with others, or posts just like these.

I watched Phelps swim his last race, the one that earned him his final gold, 8 out of 8 giving him yet another world record, 7 of those out of his eight swims. I was amazed at his technique. As soon as he jumped into the water, he instantaneously picked up the lead in seconds. The man swims like a fish, it was thrilling to watch, and he’s only 23!

  16. From the discussion More Golds, or more Totals?

    Tue, 19 Aug 2008 15:56:38 -0000

I agree Oren. I think that the more medals in total you have as a country shows how diverse your athletes are. It’s great to see an Olympian win a bronze and by watching them and how excited she/he is, you would think that they had just won gold. I think that’s a true sign of a great athlete, that they’re going for their personal best, and yes, if that turns out to be a gold, great. But if it doesn’t, it’s still just as good.

  17. From the lesson Top Careers for Indians after an MBA

    Mon, 18 Aug 2008 18:01:49 -0000

Although some of these careers may seem like they do not originate from MBA focuses, the idea here is that an MBA lets you take the role of management within these fields. So, for example if you are interested in an engineering degree, and want to advance this, you may want to take on an MBA to increase your chances of having the responsibility of an executive role, assuming more leadership.

Also, if these jobs do not fit what you’re interested in, not to worry! This is on a comprehensive list and there are many options to explore. Plus, if the options available aren’t enough, there is also the ability to take your MBA and create entrepreneurial opportunity for yourself and start your own personal venture!

The judge finally concluded that the accused would be ____________.

    Mon, 18 Aug 2008 16:36:44 -0000

    Hi Devika,

Yes, the vocabulary concepts that are part of the question bank are meant to challenge and extend your current vocabulary. I’m glad you were able to discern the correct answer!

For more clarification, here are the definitions of the word options:

    • Returned: Coming or going back to a place or activity.
    • Absolved: To declare someone free of guilt, obligation or punishment.
    • Gratified: To give pleasure or satisfaction.
    • Opposed: Anxious to prevent, put an end to, disagreeing with.

In the case of this situation, the word “absolved” works the best in this context.
