  1. From the discussion Is there a need to make GMATs harder than the present format?

    Mon, 18 Aug 2008 14:38:39 -0000

I agree that the GMAT test caters towards individuals already within the business or management industry. The GMAT functions to propel an individual from their current career or education to help them increase their problem solving and analytical skills. Also, the GMAT I feel would be a little less rigorous in their testing because of the amount of applicants nation wide that would be taking the test, over the CAT which for the most part would be a majority of Indian applicants.

    1. Set a Dated Goal for when you’d like to write the SAT.

    • This gives you a clear indication of when you’ll need to be prepared for
    • It’s a visual indicator, and something to strive for and plan around

    2. Create a Study Schedule

    • My best advice would be to integrate practice exercises that help you master all three sections.
    • Utilize the SAT Question Bank as it is a great resource to practice all forms of questions other than the essay
    • Write Sample Essays with exercises such as Essay Inspiration
    • Set a time, place, break times and what you’ll cover to keep yourself on track.

    3. Know the Concepts

    4. Practice Makes Perfect

    • Whether you’re actively participating in the SAT Question Bank or doing Tests keep an eye on your time (the timer feature works wonders for this!!)
    • Pacing and budgeting your time for each question is crucial
    • 2 minutes per question should be sufficient
    • Passage-based and essays will take a bit longer (10 minutes for a passage based Q since it involves around 5 questions based on one paragraph)

    5. Relax, sleep and absorb

    • Don’t overexert your brain
    • Taking breaks and sleeping the full amount lets your body absorb what you’ve practiced and learned
    • Don’t cram your studying, the longer you pace yourself, the more you’ll retain

    6. Consult Others

    • Use the SAT Discussions to connect with others just like you
    • You have the ability to form study sessions and question forums right on LearnHub in these forums, so make use of the tools given
    • Students just like you are creating amazing resources which both improves and enhances their own skills and learning ability as well as gives you more resources to review
    • Teach one another!! To teach someone a concept, means you must know it 10 times better in order to explain such things to someone else. Feel free to post lessons, tests, questions, debates and discussions.

Hope this helps get you on your way to SAT Success!!

Ysridhar05, you bring up a good perspective, Indians in Academics Vs. Indians in Sports. Maybe RP Singh’s position as both a cricket player and an MBA aspirant will bring a new light to the distinction.

  8. From the trivia question 243. Sentence Correction:
There are several problems with Martha's new plan. It is highly unorganized, offering no contingency, and expenses are too high.

    Fri, 15 Aug 2008 18:07:29 -0000

    Hi numerovigo,

Option C is the correct answer as it has a verb before the word expenses. Without “has”, the sentence becomes a fragmented one which is incorrect. Option B could be an option however “has too high” is an awkward construction. Choice E looks like a correct option, however “expenses” are not clarified. If the question read as “offering no contingency and the expenses are too high”, it may have been a more worthy choice.

Yeah, she’s really great! Her name is Allie Hughes, and she was one of the top ten contestants on the show. It was really too bad that she was eliminated, however she was touring in her own band prior to the show, so hopefully her touring career will be relaunched!

I doubt Andrew was being serious. Although I have to give it to her that she’s still staying “wholesome” in the eyes of today’s youth. There aren’t many role models for them to look up to.

  16. From the discussion Ethics on the Job

    Thu, 14 Aug 2008 16:58:58 -0000

Wow, what a tremendous story. Thanks for sharing Chris! I truly think it is businesses like yours that continue to sustain the way “good business” is run. Ethics are everything, the bigger the business the more money comes in and sometimes it’s easy to get side tracks and forget promises made in mission statements and the like. So, kudos for rising above the competition ethically.

I definitely agree that mission statements should show a large portion of personal ethics and goals of the company. They can act as a guiding light to keep their business on firm ground. This also shows the public that a company does have ethics in the way they do business and that they have taken such things into consideration. Ethical judgments and decision making is huge. Imagine if all corporations were to stick to ethics in business as they would in their own home for example?

It’s amazing to me how ethics continue to work. A large idea is to bring in clients and revenue. By being ethical you can feel good about the business you’re producing and your clients stay happy too. It’s only a positive trade-off when you look at the whole picture. So what do you think is stopping some corporations from taking this sort of thing into consideration?

That’s great you’re enjoying Feist! If you liked her, you should check out the band she was apart of for a while, they’re called Broken Social Scene.

I actually forgot to mention a couple of my favourite artists here. Imogen Heap and Regina Spektor are more alternatively mellow rockers. They definitely put their own spin on their music and I have a lot of respect for those who strive for that.

Check out this video of my friend’s sister performing It’s Oh So Quiet as part of the Canadian Broadway reality television show called “How do you solve a problem like Maria?”.

    Hi techie_rajan,

Congratulations on having so much experience thus far with Software Management. How did you find the GMAT the first time around? Did you have books to prepare with? 620 actually isn’t too bad of a score, it would bring you into the 75th percentile which pretty good! You may find the GMAT Lessons helpful, since you can find tips and tricks to help you understand the verbal section. As for verbal tutors in New Delhi, I’m not sure, you may want to approach a GMAT testing center. They may be able to find a suitable tutoring location and teacher for you.

  20. From the discussion Which is your favourite Shakespearian work?

    Thu, 14 Aug 2008 15:47:40 -0000

I think that the dislike for Shakespeare comes about out of our shear difference of perspective when reading these plays. The common people that would see these plays at Stratford-upon-Avon understood all of the language, all of the sly jokes and all of the lines that made them into a good afternoon of entertainment. For us to read Shakespeare, is almost like going to a languages class. I know from my own experience with Shakespeare that if I didn’t have that sidebar with translations of words and passages to modern English I would truly be lost! So I don’t think it’s necessarily the fault of teachers, it’s just that with material that is so different than what we’re used to reading and analyzing in modern English it can get frustrating.
