I’ve used wikispaces with relative success—haven’t tried any others. Here’s a couple examples of studies we’ve done:

We also have, in progress, separate studies on Hamlet and Macbeth.
I’ve found that using wikis provides motivation for the “digital natives” I’m teaching to work in their own ‘language,’ encourages them to collaborate (especially those that are more reticent in classroom discussions) and promotes deliberative discussion in which the conversation is well thought out. We maintain the spontaneity of classroom discussion in parallel.
