You can try running your Ubuntu disc live before installing anything. Just make sure that your Bios boots from a CD first and then see if everything works before installing. You don’t need an internet connection but it helps if you want to keep your system up to date. If you do decide the install a Linux version then let it install as a duel boot where you can use both Linux and Windows. Ubuntu will make its own partition on your hard drive or if you have a second drive that it can use completely that will be even better. Ubuntu, Mint or Suse are great for new users.
