    John,

Learnhub is damn good. And if the featurset in LH is good enough for your purposes it certainly is a good enough replacement. Certainly is much simpler to use. But if you have tons of courses and users and need lots of organized forums, quizzes, assignments etc…. then an LMS like Moodle is the way to go. In addition, you can customize Moodle to meet your requirements precisely. Not so with LH. You’ll have to wait till LH adds new features.

I’ll find time on a weekend to take one of you through moodle and then dokeos. We have vanilla versions of these on our development servers. Would be best to meet on Skype. Mawtools how can I get your email?

Moodle is the greatest!!! No doubt in my mind after seeing so many such apps. But also have a look at dokeos. Easy to use, neat and clean and may have most of the features you require.

Nothing better than Moodle for fostering collaborative information building. Actually, Moodle was built with collaborative learning in mind. The exemplar Moodle portal is moodle.org itself. Just look inside. The bulk of the info is in various easily accessible forums and that is very helpful because you get multiple views, experiences etc. on every topic. In a straight-laced, personal learning environment that wouldn’t be possible.

  5. From the discussion How do you feel about the openness of course and lesson architecture here at LearnHub?

    Fri, 06 Jun 2008 15:01:19 -0000

I am grateful for all the info so openly available on the web, and to the makers of those wonderful free online lessons, treatises and tutorials. When I began my web development career phase there was hardly any formal instruction on what to do, or whatever was there got out of date so fast! Thanks to the sharing instinct of so many bright people I could keep pace.

The chaos and looseness of the virtual public space are indeed stimulating…. and in this chaos informational and instructional gems sprout frequently as so many more people can be ‘heard’, not just the labeled experts. In fact, sometimes when I give paid advise I feel a little guilty :-). Had the seekers spent some time searching and chaos-wading they would definitely have encountered better advise.

My name is Himmat Singh :). I lead the technical team at Ballistic Learning, an e-learning outfit that develops learning environments and provides other e-learning services such as content conversion etc. We are Moodle and Dokeos partners and currently are doing a lot of work modifying mostly Moodle to meet the requirements of educators and businesses.

My background is in graphic design and copy writing. I came into e-learning in 2000 when a company hired me to give some sensible visual shape and information architecture to a corporate learning portal they had created. Since then I have been in this line and have picked up technical aspects like instructional design and nitty gritty stuff web-app weaving stuff like php, flash coding and database design. Generally speaking I am an annoyingly avid information seeker. The Internet has been a Godsend for my type.

Yes I would be glad to teach you both Moodle and Dokeos. I am equally fond of both systems. How do you propose we start?

PS: I wish I had made this a discussion :-). No space for comments here.

  9. From the discussion Lessons should be clearly distinguished from discussion about lessons.

    Wed, 04 Jun 2008 21:05:34 -0000

In my opinion it all depends on the stage the learner is at. If she is new to the subject she is likely to get overwhelmed and perhaps annoyed by comments etc. If she is familiar with the subject she is likely to find comments beneficial in terms of enlarging her perspective. Perhaps LearnHub should have two kinds of lessons. One that allows comments. One that doesn’t.

Overall, even with all the free learning pouring out of the Internet, I see many people still find it difficult to learn ‘freely’. They just don’t have the confidence or the capacity to process the information. They like to be guided and they like learning ‘packages’. So…. if you make a series of guided packages, hype these up a bit, and charge for these and feedback, I suppose you can make a nice regular income.

himsing, do you think LearnHub could be a good replacement for Moodle? Its certainly easier to get started with LearnHub because you don’t need to setup a server.
