      Volume of three cubes = 729.

      The volume of the new cube will be = 729 = (a^3)

      So, the edge of the cube = a = 9

      Let Sam be x years old and John be y years old.

      From given statement, x = 2(y-2)

      From given statement, x-y=2

      2y-4-y=2

      y=6

      x= 2*4 = 8

      The point is that it is not given that their difference of ‘present’ age is 2 now. The question can be answered this way. let the age of John be ‘x ’ 2 years ago, Then age of Sam is 2x. Given that their difference of ages is 2 => x=2; Then the age of Sam now is 6 and that of John is 4. The error lies in the ambiguity of framing the question.

      I am afraid I presented it wrong. what I meant was the words ” sam was twice as old as John was two years ago, and the difference between their ages be two years” when read together gives a meaning that if John was x years old, sam was 2x years old, and that id th edifference is 2, x must be 2. As such sam will be 6 years old as on today. i dont think I am fit to appear GRE if I can’t know the difference in ages betwen two people is constant over years.
