My experience is … I have been to all the institutions in Hyderabad, India … Kaplan, Priceton, TIME.. etc for a classroom coaching. the experiences are quite different. Kaplan dint want to take me as i had just one month before i have my exam date. Kaplan insisted that i need 3 months time for them to prepare me for a scoe of 700+. Priceton was even more funny. the counselor started hard selling his institute. below is the conversation i had … may not be exact but a gist…

Me: so, how do you get to know the GMAT pattern?

Counselor: we have operations in 25 countries and we have 200,000 faculty. there are atleast 10 faculty who would be taking GMAT per day just to understand the GMAT pattern.

Me: so you have 200,000 full time faculty working for you

    Counselor: yes

me: do you know which is the private company with highest number of employees

    Counselor: dont know

me: Exxon … with 250,000 people and i am sure Kaplan is not in the top 10 employers of the world.

    Counselor: !!!!!????

the reason i was putting all the above before everyone is … i just took 20 days of my time … that too while i was on business travel to crack GMAT. interestingly i took my GMAT in US while i was traveling and it worked fine.

spend 2 to 4 hours religiously on the syllabus and atleast one hour on LearnHub and i am sure even an average student like me can crack GMAT in couple months.

all the best to the GMAT aspirants

all the institutes are equally good and equally bad. what we need to understand is … GMAT is all about simple English and Mathematics. some of these institutes can only help develop some sort of discipline in us to have to take the test. should have the same discipline in us…. we dont need any institution. get a couple of books from the market (Kaplan and McGraw Hill are my picks) and spend some time on this website. you would crack the GMAT easily.

I have no idea about the exe courses from IIM but i think every course in IIM needs CAT score … I am not sure.

Post GMAT experience … yes, i made sure that i will have atleast 15 days of time to pull in my Essays and other application related activities for admission into Indian School of Business. i have a very unique work experience. I had the luxury of working for very senior people in the industry directly with a direct reporting relationship. i am just done with references & Essays and mid way in filling the rest of the application. i am sure i can submit on time.

Its a great experience as of now.

any book is fine. after all every book will have the same basics on Quant and English. Kplan is better when it comes to the test software in a CD that comes with the book.

the basis for good Quant score is … the grip we have in the basic mathematics. the more we can play around with with the basic formulas the better the score would be. its not just about knowing these formalas but using them at the right time. Especially when we are working on Data Sufficiency, we actually don’t need to solve the question … but still DS would be relatively tough compared to problem solving.

the best thing is to practice hundreds of questions. I used a book by name Quantitative abilities by R. S. Aggarwal. this is book on the higher side for GMAT but still it would give enough confidence to face GMAT Quant.

I am not sure if i am dragging this discussion too far… but this is because i am sure LearnHub was a great help in achieving a score of 690 in GMAT.

just to give a background of me … i am a Strategy consultant in a 50,000 people strong company in India and I am with 6 years of work ex behind me.

i am applying to ISB in India only.

i have introduced many people to LearnHub by now and will continue to do so …

Last date for the 2nd and last cycle of admission process is Dec 1st 2008.

i have quite a few colleagues of mine who are from ISB. whatever i heard from them is … ISB looks for

    1. a decent score in GMAT (anything above 700+) 2. Good Academics 3. work experience. this is very important. 4. Diversity – a java programmer from an IT services company would have to compete with many more candidates compared to a Hotel Management graduate or a fashion designer. it all depends on how many are going to apply with the same profile. 5. Good Essays. 6. Personal Interview … one of the toughest 7. References … this is very important. in the work hierarchy if you are directly reporting to senior management, obviously you would have a better reference.

all these are to my knowledge and understanding. Members are welcome to discard or comment on my views.

I believe that most (and the best of) business schools worldwide are looking for the same things. I would definitely agree with your points- GMAT score, past academic marks, work experience, application essays, an interview and references are usually requested for admissions to MBA schools. The emphasis may change from school to school, but the work experience is usally most important in terms of application, and references and interviews are also big factors.

The point about diversity is interesting, but it seems to make a lot of sense, especially in good business schools. They would look for a diverse class with students from different academic backgrounds. However, I wouldn’t let this discourage me from applying just because I have a background in technology as oppose of management. You just have to get better references and an essay, and hope for the best.

Thanks all for the responses. i spent 1 hour per day minimum for a month or so … on LearnHub. most of the time i spent solving the questions in Question Bank.

I have seen quite a few websites helping students with preparation for GMAT but LearnHub is the most comprehensive of all. its has everything and the Question Bank is the highlight of it..

my next plans would be to apply for Indian School of Business.
